One of the best books stores in the city. There’s a small hidden bathroom downstairs underneath the stairs. You’ll need a quarter to enter, but you can ask the staff for one if you really need to go.

One of the great indie bookstores of New York. They have a coffee shop in one corner of the corner that's a perfect place to start reading the new book you just bought.
Support a local book seller and shop here! They have a load of books (obviously, make sure to make it downstairs), but also a great selection of mags and greeting cards for that last-minute purchase.
This is probably the most positively endorsed place on foursquare (with regard to tips). People like it - and why not? It's a nice coffee shop/bookstore.
My favourite indie bookstore in the city. Check out the staff recommendation for some cool titles to consider. They have a lot of events at the basement, so do check the event listings at the entrance
McNally Jackson is definitely one of my favorite bookstores in NYC. There's a huge selection of books which are all well-organized and incredibly interesting. And check out their monthly events!
Kinfolk, Cereal, The Great Discontent.. This place has the newest and most trendy stuff almost instantly. And even more important, they know what they're doing and really care about print media.
Absolutely my fav. place to go. Love the fact that it doesn't close early. And it has many independent magazines and books. Poetry section is nice:) And it sells my fav. notebook (little and black).
High density of excellent books ranging from popular to esoteric. Great cookbook section and don't miss the print-your-own-book press next to the snack bar.
Great selection of books, really nice children's department. Very good inhouse coffeeshop with great selection of baked goods and sandwiches. You can also get your own book printed here.
lovely book store including a machine that prints personal books. Right in the shop you'll find a lovely cafe that keeps you caffeinated for reading through your newly shopped treasures
My favorite place in NY. Nicest people, amusing view, best books and awesome cafeteria (love the cappuccino, the bagles and the egg sandwich). Sorry no wifi.
The design and cookbook section are right next to each other so needless to say I found pure bliss in a 10 square food section of the store. They have a little cafe too.
A carefully curated selection of books, great coffee, a soundtrack of the most perfect jazz, and PoD independent books. We've all fantasized about running this business; they made it happen.
Superb curation of new and notable fiction. Download the Goodreads app so you can scan titles and add them to your list. Good place to visit when you feel your Kindle is just not tactile enough.
I love this bookstore. It has a ride variety of books and you never feel rushed. You can browse for hours and should you get thirsty you can always get a cup of coffee.
McNally Jackson Bookstore is a great place to scour for your next read and to do homework. They also have a café to provide you with much needed refreshments for those late night study sessions.
Buy a book, any book, and support the printed word so it can last a little longer. Bookstores are a dying breed, and this one needs to stay as long as it can.
Wonderful bookstore with pastries stocked from Balthazar and tasty house-made quiches. Coffee is quite good also. Great place to relax for an afternoon.
Fantastic selection of books a cross a wide range of disciplines. Fiction is sorted by geographic origin (e.g. Russia, South America, etc) which is pretty cool.
Great soho book shop teaches your kids about steam punk while letting them make steam punk themed valentines. Upstairs cafe has great bran muffins and lattes and baristas will talk Shakespeare.
[Shopping] A truly great book store with clever selections, great magazine department, a good cafe and strong programming with author readings almost every night (mcnallyjackson.com/event).
The best literary hot spot boasts a warm atmosphere, well-curated selection and convivial café. It also has the city’s first Espresso Book Machine, which prints a growing number of texts on demand. Read more
Stumptown coffee is always welcome but you're missing out if you don't sample the always delicious cookies. Try the salted peanut butter, you'll thank me later.
The store makes you want to read. But even more interesting, it makes customers want to write, as it has an in-house machine that prints and binds your own paperbacks. Read more
A bookstore like it should be: bright, enthusiastic staff, a balanced selection and awesome coffee. Readings on a nightly basis. A great place for writers and those who like to stalk them.
Independent book store in this age that serves something other than Starbucks coffee? Plus this espresso book machine. You must at least check out this place
The turkey sandwich with thyme and side salad with cranberries is delicious! The green iced tea with pear is fantastic! The apple pie looks amazing, but haven't tried it yet.
