These wines are produced in both dry and off-dry styles, and benefit from high mineral content in the tuffeau soils from which the vines grow. Tart tree fruit, lemon, chamomile, and ginger dominate the nose and palate. The more oxidative versions found in Savennieres and Vouvray can give off aromas of hay, lanolin, pistachios, and bruised apples. Although St-Estèphe may lack the number of classified growths when compared with the other communes of the Médoc, this is a region that provides rich, fruity wines that are more consistent with each vintage than any other appellation on the left-bank of the Gironde river.
