Conifers
Simply Put, Conifers Are Cone-Bearing (Or Cone-Like) Trees and Shrubs.
The term is often used interchangeably with evergreens BUT not all evergreens are conifers and not all conifers are evergreen. Common conifers include pines, firs, spruces, junipers, hemlocks, cedars, yews, cypresses, larches, redwoods, Japanese cedars, and sequoia. Wight's carries numerous dwarf and weeping conifer varieties (as well as standard ones) collected from the finest arboretums around the world.
Make Sure You Always Check Their Growth Rate Before Selecting One for Your Landscape
We always want to help you get the right plant in the right place. Growth rates will range form 1/4" to 3 feet a year. There are numerous dwarf cultivars available as well, to add to the color spectrum in your landscape. Many even turn colors during colder winter months. They can be grown in containers for a few years and are also a favorite of bonsai enthusiasts. Wight's carries smaller 4" and one gallon sizes of many dwarfs as well as specimen sizes in larger growing plants. Stop in and explore the wonderful world of conifers at Wight's!
The Year-Round Color in a Variety of Shapes and Textures That Conifers Bring to Our Landscapes Makes Them Very Popular.
The selection is truly endless - from tall and narrow to short and stout, from yellow to blue to every shade of green, from the miniature to the massive - there is a conifer for every spot in the garden.

Fruit Trees and Berries
There is nothing more satisfying in gardening than growing your own edibles. Fruits and berries are both easy to grow and so delicious to eat!
Wight's Carries An Excellent Selection of Fruit Trees for Growing in Our Climate.
We have partnered for years with our local Skagit Valley grower and the varieties we carry have been tested for a number of years in Mt. Vernon to insure disease resistance and production in our mild climate.
Have Room for Only One Tree?
We carry combination fruit trees as well - multiple grafted apples, cherries, pears, plums, and Asian pears, in either tree form or espalier form to train along fences or posts. These allow one tree to cross pollinate itself eliminating the need for a second tree and ultimately saving space.
You Will Also Find a Huge Selection of Berries At Wight's Suitable for Western Washington Gardens.
From Strawberries to Blueberries, from Raspberries to Marionberries, from Gooseberries to Currants - Wight's has what you need to make any pie, cobbler, crisp, jam or jelly! Looking to make your own wine or grow some good table grapes? We have a nice selection of good Western Washington grapes as well. You will find many other edibles at Wight's including but not limited to Rhubarb, Horseradish, Asparagus, Kiwis, Seed Potatoes, Onions and Garlic.
All Fruit Production Comes From Two Factors - Heating Units (How Warm and Long the Summer Is) and Chilling Units (How Long and Cold the Winter Is) .
In Western Washington we have minimal chill and not the most heat - thus we choose trees that produce easily under these conditions. Most trees need to be pollinated but there are exceptions.
Most Varieties We Stock Are Available in Dwarf Rootstock As Well As Semi-Dwarf - Again Saving Space with a Smaller Size Tree.
The Gisela rootstock cherries in particular are outstanding dwarfs as are our mini-dwarf apples - small enough to grow in a whiskey barrel! Come in and see our selection of Apples, Cherries, Plums, Pears, Asian pears, Peaches, Nectarines, Apricots, Nuts, Persimmons, and Figs and let's get eating!
Grasses
Ornamental Grasses bring great richness of texture, variety, and beauty to set off your finest flowers. These are the darlings of garden designers and are easy to grow and maintain. Grasses add interest to a garden by changing with the seasons. They don't disappear; instead evolving throughout the year.
Cool Season Grasses
Cool season grass will start to grow early in the spring and may even remain semi-evergreen over the winter. Cool season grasses also seem to do better and have better foliage quality when temperatures are cool or if they are given sufficient water during drought periods. Some of the more popular cool season grasses include, Fescues, Blue Oat Grass, Tufted Hair Grass, and Autumn Moor Grass.
Warm Season Grasses
Warm season grasses will do better during warmer times of the year and remain good looking even when temperatures are high and moisture is limited. Warm season grasses do not begin to show growth until the weather becomes stable and the soils warm. Some warm season grasses include Northern Sea Oats, Japanese Silver Grass, Hardy Pampas Grass, Perennial Fountain Grass, Switch Grass and Prairie Cord Grass.
Grasses Tips & Ideas
Tip
Cut back ornamental grasses in March when the new growth is just beginning. Check the variety's needs first. Some should be cut back hard; some varieties should be cut down two thirds and do not cut members of the carex family at all.
Ground Covers
Ground Cover Is Typically Used Where It Is Not Practical to Grow a Lawn
For instance on a slope, in rocky or shady areas. They also can be used to unify an area landscaped in shrubs and/or trees.
Here Are Some Things to Consider:
Evergreen/deciduous/herbaceous; Foliage color/texture; Bloom/no bloom; Container/planter; Foot traffic; Height/spread
A Ground Cover Planting Is Essentially "Living Mulch"
Suppressing weeds, softening surfaces and conserving the necessary moisture in the soil. The roots of these plants are helpful with erosion control on rockeries and hillsides. Working with ground covers offers endless choices and possibilities for your garden design. Let us help you sort out the best solution for you.
Some of Our Favorite Ground Covers:
For sun: Heathers And Heaths, Ceanothus, Creeping Thymes, Euonymus, Sun Rose, Kinnikinnick, Cotoneasters, Hypericum; For shade: Pachysandra, Vinca, Salal, Bunchberry, Blue Star Creeper
Ground Cover Highlights
Four Types of Groundcover
Herbaceous plants (non-woody plants) , Sub-shrubs (low-growing, spreading shrubs) , Vines, Moss
Tips
Be a good "steward of the earth". Do not plant invasive plants that can overgrow their boundaries and become a problem plant in your neighbors' yards or especially in a native environment.
Ground Cover Success Is Dependent On
Correct Plant Choices for the Area

Successful "Shopping" in Your Garden Begins with Careful Planning.
Where you plant does matter. Almost all edibles must get at least 6 hours of sun per day. They must be plants agreeable to our Pacific Northwest climate. The concept is called "Right Plant, Right Place". Your success depends on it.

Appropriate Tools for the Size of Your Garden
These Are a Few Tips for Planting:
Some Seeds May Require Soaking Overnight.
Read the seed packet for helpful hints on this as well as spacing and planting depth.
Some Years Our Nw Summers Are Not Hot Enough for Certain Heat Loving Vegetables
Like tomatoes, peppers, and pumpkins to ripen, so consider buying gallon size starts to advance the growing season or choose varieties that require less time to mature.
Start the Gardening Season in March with Cold-Hardy Vegetables That Tolerate Frost, Such As Peas, Salad Greens, Cole Crops, Beets, and Chard.
When It Comes to Timing in Your Garden, Temperature Over Rules Calendar Date.
Our average last frost date is April 7th, so about half of the time it will not frost again and it will be safe to plant tender plants. A definite safe date is not until April 30th. Tropicals like tomatoes and peppers do better getting planted out at the end of May and basil, not until mid-June! Garden timing is always a gamble in the northwest!
Be Sure to Leave Room for Sprawling Vines (Peas, Tomatoes, Squash, Pole Beans) to Spread Out Or Grow Up a Support.

Edibles Hints & Tips
Herb Tips
Herbs don't have to be grown in a proper garden bed. They may be planted in pots, baskets and window boxes as well as mixed into the landscape. The more you snip and pinch your herbs the more they respond with added growth.
Vegetable Tips
For best selection, buy your seeds in January to plant out when weather permits. Soak your legume seeds in a seed inoculant for a bigger and better harvest. Extend your vegetable gardening season with products from the garden center like: Frost cloth or "Wall of Water" to hold in heat and prevent damage from frost. Protect your vegetables from insects and pests with "Harvest Guard." Keep the fruits of your labor away from the birds and critters with bird netting.
Japanese Maples
Japanese Maples
(including the species Acer palmatum, Acer japonicum, and Acer shirawasawanum) are smaller deciduous trees and shrubs prized for their spectacular foliages and colors in Pacific Northwest gardens. They do well in containers and many are favorites to train as bonsai as well.
Check with Our Nursery Experts to Determine the Cultivars That Are Best for Your Planting Conditions and Visual Preferences.
Wight's carries hundreds of cultivars and is always looking for the latest most worthwhile introductions. We stock from 4" starter size to large specimens in many of the varieties. Remember - Wight's is the Northwest source for the best Japanese Maples!
It Is Easy to Get "Hooked" On Collecting Japanese Maples That Have Different Colored and Shaped Foliages.
Their form can be vase-like, domed, upright, or weeping in any height or spread from 2 feet to 30 feet. Spring and summer provide changing foliage colors and of course in autumn the maples light up the landscape with intense yellows, oranges, and reds. You will also find winter interest in the graceful shape of trunks and branching as well as bright bark colors - most notably the coral bark maple.
Perennials
Perennials Are a Smart Gardener's Best Friend
Simply because they are a permanent plant that has a specific bloom time in the year. Unlike annuals that die away at frost, perennials can live for years blooming annually for around 4 - 8 weeks. You can count on them to put on a show with little effort from you!
Few Perennials Are "Evergreen" in Our Pacific Northwest Climate
But the ones that are evergreen are fabulous! We like to carry a good collection for the fall and winter months because, in addition to adding foliage interest to your garden, they do an excellent job in your planters and hanging baskets.
There Seems to Be As Many Perennial Varieties As There Are Varieties of Specific Spaces in the Garden Pallet to Fill.
Be sure to plan your garden with bloom-time in mind as well as color, height and spread. It will change looks every few weeks as different perennials go in and out of bloom. Different combinations will come into play. It can be very exciting and rewarding!
Many Perennials Are Herbaceous
That is to say that the foliage dies back to the ground as the plant's roots go dormant for the winter. Then you'll get nice fresh new leaves the next spring!
Perennials, Like Most Plants Grown Properly, Require Very Little to Perform Well. Make Sure to:
Plant them in the correct sun exposure (sun/shade) , Enrich the soil often with compost and mulch, Feed and water as needed, Groom after bloom

Perennial Tips & Ideas
With proper planning, the perennial plant family can provide year round color.
Old Adage
Regarding perennial growth: "the first year they sleep, the second year they creep and the third year they leap."
Tips
Mix it up! Perennials can be easily incorporated into planters and hanging baskets as well as looking great tucked in and amongst roses and other garden plantings. Mulching your established perennials with a good organic compost in the fall will enrich them with great nutrients all winter. They will burst forth with great vigor in the spring! Deadhead (picking spent blooms) will make your plant look better and often times encourage some plants to send up some new blooms. If you want to leave a few seed pods on your plant, and let fall to the ground to start new plants next year. Staking taller and fluffier perennials is very important for both looks and longevity of the bloom cycle. There are lots of cool plant supports available in our Garden Center. Plan to stake before your stems fall over and break!
Planters and Hanging Baskets
Planting spectacular container gardens is simply a matter of combining three elements: great plant material, quality soil and amendments - our beautiful Northwest summer will take care of the rest.
Start with a Good Organic Potting Soil.
Soil from your yard will be too heavy; it won't allow air and water to flow in the container correctly. Add an organic starter fertilizer and a time-released fertilizer such as Osmocote. These will be a steady slow diet for your plants all summer however you will still want to use a good water soluble fertilizer throughout the growing season, especially if the temperatures are cool.
If You Are Looking for Help with Planting Your Container Garden
Simply choose your pot and plant material and our talented staff will custom design and plant it for you free of charge*. Whether you are planting vibrant annuals for full sun or lush and lovely foliage for shade, your container garden will be the star of your garden.
When Choosing Plant Material
Ook for a combination of different plant shapes, color, leaf texture and size that will compliment each other. Start with 1 larger vertical plant for the center of attention. Fill in around it with plants that grow upright in a compact area like geraniums or heliotrope. Tuck in some trailing foliage, like sweet potato vine or vinca to create visual interest with your flowering varieties. You'll need enough plants to fill the entire surface of the container. This is an instance when more is better.
The More You Feed Your Annual Container Garden, the More It Will Reward Your Efforts with Bountiful Beauty.
All soils and fertilizers are not created equal, so ask our nursery professionals for their recommendations. Remember, your nurseryman/woman is a gardener just like you. Years of successful container planting yields experienced and professional advice.
Planters Tips & Ideas
Old Adage
When creating a container garden, use 3 types of plants: "thrillers, spillers and fillers".
Tips
If you want to attract hummingbirds, remember they love Fuchsia baskets -especially the orange to red trumpet bloom varieties. Hummingbird feeders are designed with this in mind. For best blooming, fertilize your planters every 5-7 days. Deadheading is the term used for grooming annuals by removing the spent blooms before they go to seed. Hanging baskets don't always have to hang. They look fabulous on a pedestal.
Roses in Containers
Don't forget that roses do well in containers. They make a great impact on patios and decks. Tree roses can be underplanted with blooming annuals for continuous color. Planted in an urn type planter, this would be a very elegant look.
Rhododendrons & Azaleas
When Rhododendrons and Azaleas Are in Bloom They Can Be Magnificent Show Stoppers!
With a variety of foliages and blooms these shrubs are a staple of NW gardens. Both Rhododendrons and Azaleas can be evergreen or deciduous with thousands of varieties available.
Rhodies and Azaleas Love Our Acid Soil and Like to Be Moist But Not Waterlogged.
All thrive in part sun/part shade but many do well in full sun or full shade. They are very shallow rooted so it is wise not to cultivate around them.
Wight's Stocks the Best Hybrids
From NW breeders always keeping an eye out for the best foliages, flower colors, and quality of the shrubs so that you will have an attractive plant throughout the year whether in bloom or not. Discover our selection of specie and "Yak" hybrid Rhododendrons (Japanese Yakushimanum specie) - we have the best assortment of unusual species and "Yak" Rhododendrons in the NW. Looking for a new hybrid? Wight's will always find the latest and greatest in Rhododendrons and Azaleas.
Tips & Ideas
Fertilize Azaleas and Rhododendrons with An Acidic Fertilizer
When new growth begins in the spring, again at bloom time or right after; then feed monthly until August. Always prune Rhodies after bloom and never more than 1/3 of total plant. Shearing Azaleas after flowering will keep them lower and denser and always produces more bloom year to year.
Are Your Rhody Leaves Notched?
That would be the work of the root weevil! Their larvae feed on the rhododendron roots. Usually the shrub will out compete the insects however if the damage is extensive you made need to dispatch with them; come on in and our nursery or garden center personnel can show you some product options for getting rid of them. If you want to get a look at these long-snouted, evil weevils, they are most active at night. We have a natural organic root weevil spray that works!
Roses
Our 2013 selection of roses have arrived, and we have hand pruned and potted them to be ready for you. Our selection of Roses will make a wonderful addition to your rose garden or a beautiful focal point in your landscape. Wight's offers over 175 varieties that are great for the Pacific Northwest.
Hybrid Teas
Perfect for the cutting garden! Hybrid tea roses have classic, shapely blooms that sit atop long single stems, looking beautiful in arrangements and in the garden. They are known for their highly fragrant blooms in a variety of scents.
Grandifloras
These produce large blooms of clusters and single blooms. The blooms are usually double and without a striking fragrance. Bushes normally grow to a height of 3 to 6 feet, making it ideal as a background border planting.
Shrub Roses
Free-blooming with different flower sizes and forms, broadly varying in mature size but have a full bushy habit. They have good disease resistance and hardiness. A great way to add color to your landscape!
Floribundas
Excellent for landscaping, as background shrubs, planted in masses, as hedges and in borders. They are more compact than hybrid teas and produce profuse clusters of blooms throughout the summer months.
Climbing Roses
Climbers and ramblers can range in size from miniature climbers (6 feet) to larger ones that can grow 10-12 feet up a tree. Climbers add grace and interest to every garden wherever you plant them.
Miniature Roses
Miniature roses produce bursts of color and hide the bare canes of the larger hybrid tea roses. They also make great landscape plantings and can be used for lovely low hedges and borders.

Shrubs
Shrubs Can Add a More Permanent Structure to Your Landscape.
They present a backdrop for border plants like annuals, perennials, and bulbs during warmer seasons and carry their structure through the winter without dying to ground. They should be utilized along foundations, in borders, or as hedging or barriers along property lines. Frankly gardeners can tuck a shrub into just about every spot in the garden from full sun to full shade. They are easy to care for and provide year around texture, shape and color to the garden.
Shrub Tips & Ideas
Wight's nursery personnel can help you choose the perfect shrubs for your needs. Come in prepared with information on your soil type, sun exposure, eventual height and spread needs (watch out for overhead or underground, utility lines!) , whether it can be deciduous or not and what you are trying to achieve with the shrub. We can give you information on care requirements: if and when to fertilize, prune or deadhead. What their drought tolerance, disease resistance and cold hardiness are.
Shrubs Can Be Evergreen Or Deciduous.
Evergreen shrubs come in every shade of green and also numerous variegated selections for added foliage interest with splashes of yellow, cream, or white. Wight's stocks all the classic deciduous shrubs for spring and summer bloom followed by fall colors as well as all the latest introductions from the "Color Choice" line by Proven Winners. Most shrubs will flower, some of which are fragrant and some of which are attractive to hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. Many produce showy berries that are nutritious for birds and wildlife. No matter what time of the year, you can find a shrub that will bloom in the Pacific Northwest even in the middle of winter. Let's get planting!
Trees
The Vast Number of Trees Available to the Gardener Can At Times Be Overwhelming.
Let us help you find the "right tree for the right place" in your landscape. Whether you are concerned about eventual size, disease resistance, root systems, or are looking for a particular season for bloom or foliage color Wight's has the tree for you. Not only do trees provide natural beauty and shade but also wildlife habitat, erosion control, and cleaner air through carbon dioxide reduction. Wight's carries many of the standard shade and flowering trees, an excellent selection of dogwoods, and many newer introductions and rare species. Let's get planting remember the best time to plant was 20 years ago and the second best time is today!
Tree Tips & Ideas
Trees are often planted to celebrate a life, either at the time of birth to grow along with the child or as a memorial to a loved one who has passed away.
Vines
Vines are flexible and thus can be trained to wrap around a post, cover a chain link fence, arch, arbor, pergola, obelisk, or any structure useful for support. They can soften or disguise a wall or enhance an outdoor structure while providing summer shade for a window or outdoor living area. We carry a huge selection of perennial and evergreen vines and well as some annual vines for maximum summer bloom. Most all vines are rapid growing and all vines are easy to cultivate and can provide months of seasonal bloom as well as attractive foliages. Grab one and let's get climbing!

Annual Vines for Summer Color
Canary Vines, Scarlet Runner Beans, Thunbergia (Black Eyed Susan) , and Sweet Peas.
Vines Tips & Ideas
Did Your Clematis Suddenly Die Back Just When It Was About to Bloom?
Never fear, it is probably not dead, just hit by "clematis wilt". Wilt is caused by a fungus called Ascochyta clematidina. It tends to infect damaged stems and is most heartbreaking on young, smaller plants that can completely collapse to the ground. Nothing can revive the affected stems; simply cut them down plus one inch into the healthy area (this may even be underground) . Get rid of the diseased cuttings (do not compost them yourself) . Then spray the remaining stems and water the ground around them with a good fungicide. Repeat the spraying/watering at two week intervals until you are sure that there is no further danger of infection. New shoots will come from below the ground in a few weeks or as long as 3 years. When you plant clematis, it is helpful to set it in the soil up to 4 6 inches deeper than the size of the container. It will sprout new roots on any stems buried underground. This will give it a stronger root system to withstand the wilt. Make sure it is in well draining soil, add lime or gypsum (for calcium) to the backfill soil as well as TerraRosa Perennial food.

Successful Decorating Checklist
Consistency
Choose your vision and stick to it! What 3 words describe the interior decor of your dreams?
Color Is Key
Your color selections will reward you if you stay true to them.
Mix Textures
'elements' and shapes for added interest and a concise look.
Collect
Swatches and color samples of the interior you are working with, and carry them with you.
Bigger Is Better!
When in doubt about accessories think large.
Look for Versatility.
Choose accessories that you can use in more than one place.
Accent Furniture
From Small Side Tables to Large Armoires We Believe Our Accent Furniture Should Absolutely Not Be Found On Page 3 of a Catalog.
Our buyers search the market for pieces that are functional and add an element of individuality and style to your home. Great pieces like side tables for bedrooms; tables, armoires and cupboards for kitchens, nooks and dining areas; entry tables for that oh so important first impression, sofa tables for lighting and accessorizing seating areas; and those difficult to find accent stands for plants and artwork.
When Choosing Accent Furniture: Measure Your Space Vertically and Horizontally.
When possible, take a finish sample home (a drawer, swatch or good photo) for color verification. Understand the care of the piece.
Accent Lighting
Every Space Is Enhanced with Proper Lighting.
As decorative as they are functional, a lamp can be the finishing touch or be the focal point of your rooms' décor. Lamps come in a wide variety styles and sizes.
When Choosing a Lamp, Always Take in to Consideration the Shade Color, Especially If It Is Needed for Reading.
While often elegant when used for decorative purposes, a colored shade will dim the light that the lamp will cast. And, if you really like a lamp don't be afraid to buy a different shade that will better suit your purposes. Shades are relatively inexpensive.
Cast Away Those Dark Corners!!
A lamp will create coziness instantly and every room should have at least one in residence - another 'must have' decorating element. Great for buffets, sofa tables, end tables and the all important night stand. But equally important, are floor lamps for corners and reading. Small lamps add a cozy touch in bookshelves, kitchen counters, laundry rooms, even bathrooms.
Decorative Accessories
Our Home Décor Is Selected for Uniqueness and Affordability.
Pieces that add that something extra like: drama, whimsy, coziness, or that needed punch of color. Home accessories are vital to successful interior décor. And remember, home accessories are like fashion accessories they define and refine your style. The right frame, box and statuette are to your home what the right necklace, shoes or scarf is to an outfit.
When Choosing Decorative Accessories: Remember Decorating Is a Process, Especially Where Accessories Are Concerned.
The fun is in the gathering of special touches that reflect your style. Choosing items that can be moved throughout your home will stretch your dollar and keep things looking fresh.
Seasonal Touches Are a Fun and Easy Way to Keep Things Fresh.
At work or at home, every season change is another decorating opportunity. Adding a few festive touches to your existing décor will enliven and enrich your spaces.
Wall Art and Mirrors
Make a Statement. An Empty Wall Is An Opportunity to Introduce Great Art.
Wall art evokes more emotion than any other element of a room's décor. Selecting the right pieces can make or break a room and be the decorating detail that defines your style. With 100's of choices, in every style and price range, Wight's is a destination for great wall art. Framed and canvas art, mirrors, metal wall decor and more. Unique and affordable in today's most popular mediums and presentations.
When Choosing Wall Art Stay Within Your Homes Color Pallet and Style, But Don't Be Afraid to Be a Bit Bold.
Add a punch of color, or hang pairs of pictures rather than one piece. Use mirrors for added light and interest. And when in doubt, go large. Using artwork that is too small is the most common decorating mistake people make.

The longer you spend looking at them, the better you get at noticing their details. Many birders keep "life lists" of every species they have seen in the wild. They enjoy discovering all kinds of details such as which birds prefer which food, their mating habits, what their nests and eggs look like and how they interact with their young.

Birding Tips & Ideas
Many backyard birds provide excellent, natural insect control!!!
Be Sure to Clean Your Birdbath Every Day Or Two.
Dirty water can harbor harmful bacteria, mold and mildew. If you clean it often enough, a hose and scrub brush are all you'll need. If the task requires more, use a 10% bleach to water solution and be sure to flush it with water thoroughly afterwards.
Hummingbird Antics Are a Local Favorite for Backyard Birders.
Their feeders should be kept out of the sun to discourage deadly bacteria problems. Be sure to clean the feeder and refill it at least once a week and more often in warm weather. Use only very hot water and vinegar to clean your feeders. Detergents and soap can leave behind harmful residues. Never use honey or food coloring in your feeder.
If Your Seed Feeder Molds Due to Moisture in the Air, the Birds Will Not Feed At It. Clean Or Replace It and Fill with Fresh, New Seed.
Anna's Hummingbirds Are More Cold Tolerant So You May See Them All Winter.
You can improve your chance of seeing them by planting winter blooming shrubs such as Mahonia and Sarcococca for them. In freezing temperatures you may want to bring your feeder in at night and maybe even have two feeders to rotate inside and out as they freeze.
Garden Gift and Décor
Decorating Has Moved Outdoors!
Our gardens now are often akin to outdoor rooms, extending our living spaces and expanding our ideas about decoration. Hardscapes, like ponds, patios and pergolas are accessorized with things like gazing balls (just for a bit of shine and color) wind chimes (a little pleasing sound effect) and garden gnomes (a little whimsy) , just because it's fun. In fact the garden is the perfect place to discover a fairy, albeit a manufactured creature, living happily beneath a tree or alongside a pond. It's all about creating an environment that inspires you to enjoy your outdoor spaces and bring a smile to your face.

Garden Solutions Highlights
Tips
Try to "Go Green!" and use safe non-toxic products in the garden. Anticipate landscape problems - prevent them if possible or cure them early with natural/organic sprays instead of waiting until damage is such that a harsher chemical treatment is necessary. Always read labels on all products before using and use only according to directions. Bring in any plant samples to our nursery experts for free diagnosis and identification. It is helpful to include as many parts of the plant as possible for identification: flower, leaf, stem and photos are great too.

Fountain Tips
To Prevent Algae Growth in Either An Indoor Or Outdoor Fountain Wight's Recommends Using Fountec Algaecide Clarifier.
It is safe for all animals except it is toxic to fish. Please read the label for usage instructions.
Spring Care
Before restarting your fountain for the season, check for any cracks. The best way to do this is fill it with water (every tier if there are multiple) and wait an hour or so. If the bowls are not leaking out the side, it's a good bet the concrete is fine. This also checks the seals from tier to tier. Next, test the pump in a sink or bucket. If you did not remove the pump (as recommended for winter) you can clean and fill the bowl and just test it there. Clean the fountain with water and a soft brush. Rinse it once or twice and reconnect the pump. Get it flowing and check that the fountain is level. If the water flow is even, you're all set up! Add Fountec or Algaefix throughout the season to keep algae down. Enjoy another summer of fountain ambience!
We Recommend Pondcare Algaefix to Clear Or Prevent Algae Growth in Outdoor Fountains Or Ponds.
This one is safe for koi and aquatic plants. To clean your fountain or statuary use a soft bristle brush and rinse well. Never use bleach as it can harm the finish and corrode the pump. To keep the flow strong, clean the pump filter and back flush the tubing as needed. Sealer spray or Henri's Polish applied annually will restore any lost luster.

Lawn Care Tips
Fall Lawn Overseeding
It is important to encourage a lush, blend of cultivated grasses in your turf. Otherwise, weed and weedy grass seed will fill-in thin areas. Autumn is the perfect time to overseed your lawn because the soil temperature is still warm enough for the seed to germinate and the rains return to keep the seed and seedlings from drying out and dying. Also, if your lawn thickens up over the fall and winter it will shade out the annual, spring-germinating weed seeds. Mid-September (up to mid-October) is your best, fall window of opportunity.
Tips
Treat for crane fly grubs in early spring (MARCH) and fall (SEPTEMBER) to keep lawn healthy. Try new Bonide "Weed Beater Ultra" - great for lawn weed control and works great in cool weather! Our Gardner and Bloome organic soil building compost is excellent for topdressing existing lawns as well as new lawn installation.
