A deep tissue massage is designed to relieve severe tension in muscles & connective tissue or fascia. It is often recommended for individuals who experience consistent pain w/ more postural strain injury, repetitive strain injury, etc. The term “deep tissue” is often misused to identify a massage that is performed w/ sustained deep pressure. A deep tissue massage is a separate category of massage therapy which is used to treat particular muscular skeletal disorders & complaints. A deep tissue massage employs a dedicated set of techniques & strokes to achieve a measure of relief. It should not be confused w/ “deep pressure” massage which is one that is performed w/ sustained stong, occasionally intense pressure throughout a full body session, which is not performed to address a specific complaint. Deep tissue massage is applied to both the superficial & deep layers of muscles, fascia, & other structures.

The body responds to these stressors by releasing two hormones called cortisol & adrenaline from the Adrenal Cortex of the Adrenal Glands located on top of the kidneys. These hormones are apart of the bodies “fight or flight” response. They can be healthy in normal levels but detrimental when released in excess. Some of the effects include: the destruction of healthy muscle, the slowing of cell regeneration, impaired digestion, metabolism, mental function, & immune system function. Stress can be reduced using meditation & controlled breathing techniques. One example is the “Dot Technique”. The Dot Technique Lie on back in a relaxed (supine) position, palms facing upwards towards the ceiling in order to externally rotate the humorous. This retracts the scapula back to a neutral position. Use bolsters beneath knees if lower lumbar experiences pain. Support can be used underneath head to insure the cervical spine is in a neatral position. Close your eyes & attempt to find a dot in your mind’s eye. It shouldn’t be hard to find, so don’t struggle. It can be any color, use your imagination. If you are having trouble finding a dot, just look into a bright light for a few seconds. The purpose of focusing on this dot, is to take your mind off of other subjects that may cause stress such as work, family, or previous engagements. Focus on 2 – 3 cycles of deep breathing. Put your fingers on your rib cage & feel as it expands & contracts w/ each breath. Your mind may start to wander, so just repeat a few cycles of this focused breathing. With enough practice you will be able to fall asleep or get a well deserved break.
