Reno Falconiere spends his time late in his career advising sparkling wine producers throughout the region. That is because since the mid 1980's he and his estate have been the benchmark for quality Spumante Erbaluce di Caluso. Farmed in the alpine hills of Piedmont since at least the early seventeenth century, Erbaluce still gets lost amid all the quality wines of the Langhe. Produced to the exact standards of Champagne or better, there is a reason this tiny appellation was awarded DOCG status in 2010, and continues to draw deserved attention vintage after vintage.

Recently named a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its vineyard landscape, the Langhe region of Piedmont is one of the most favorable places for growing vines in the world. Met with the grandeur of endless folding hillsides planted predominantly to indigenous grapes, it's tempting for one to imagine almost ANY grape variety's potential to thrive there. "Sorriso" is a unique blend of international grape varieties not typical for the region. While traditionalists may argue that only local grapes fully express the sacred terroir of the Langhe, Scavino saw the potential to expand the magic of Piedmont by this beautifully fresh and vibrant expression of Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier. The island of Ischia, the largest of the Phlegrean Islands in the Tyrrhenian Sea, is about 20 mi. offshore from Naples. It is roughly 6 mi. east to west and 4 mi. north to south, entirely mountainous, and is famous for its thermal gardens created by its volcanic activity. Antonio Mazzella crafts this singular wine from what he describes as "vertical vineyards" on the steep hills mere feet from where the land meets the sea. Brimming forth with sun-kissed freshness and radiant texture, not many wines can convey a "sense of place" quite like this one, just try to not be swept away to an island paradise after one sip

Bianco Secco is a seductive blend of Garganega, Trebbiano Toscana, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Saorin derinving from 30 year old vines grown in mineral rich soils. 1968 was the inaugural vintage of the original "Super Tuscan" wine: "Sassicaia", an homage to the rocky place where Cabernet Sauvignon vines were first planted in Bolgheri. This premium wine, made with grapes foreign to Tuscany, could only be labeled as "Vino da Tavola" (table wine) until their popularity inspired a revolution of the modern Italian wine-making laws near the turn of the 21st century. The estate's modern "Guidalberto" bottling embodies the same progressive, quality-minded philosophy of it's "big brother", and is sourced from the same vineyards. This classic blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot is as big and beautiful as the name "Super Tuscan" inspires.

In the rolling Langhe hills of Piedmont, provenance is everything. Being able to denote specific vineyard sites is a sure-fire way to infer style and quality. Historically reserved for top Barolo and Barbaresco bottlings, we are seeing a growing number of Barberas with single-vineyard designates on their labels. The south-facing Campo di Gatto plot within the fame Bussia vineyard contains 50 year old Barbera vines and yields a fuller and more complex style, showcasing the grape's potential when planted in its ideal location.

In 2010 the Barolo region was officially demarcated and recognized for its 181 "Menzioni" , more commonly referred to as "Cru". These designations celebrate the soulfully expressive characteristics of each site's diverse soils, varying altitudes, and unique grape growing typicity. Outside of the Côte de Nuits in Burgundy, there is perhaps no other region that is studied and dissected in greater detail than the zone of Barolo. The "Ravera di Monforte" Cru is on the southern-most border of Barolo and enjoys warm sunlight juxtaposed against cool hilltop breezes eliciting a beautifully balanced wine of elegance and power.

Once kept in the shadows of family business in Patriarchal Italy, recent societal changes are bringing forth a new generation of women in wine. Among these rising stars are three sisters, Paola, Valentina, and Federica Grasso, the now fourth generation proprietors and vintners of Ca' del Baio. They farm 4 different crus from within the Barbaresco winegrowing area and blend them to make "Autinbej". Perhaps it's the 40-year old Nebbiolo vines, maybe its the female touch, but this is Barbaresco at its finest: elegance, finesse, and substantive depth.

Angelo Gaja is the man credited for bringing the small commune of Barbaresco out of obscurity. His influence has changed the way the world views Italian wine to this day. A master of Nebbiolo--the austere, tannic grape once considered only quaffable after decades of bottle age. Angelo saw its potential as a world class wine. Despite pushback from his peers, he employed new (and what most considered outlandish) practices both in the vineyard and the winery to promote freshness and elegance in his wine.

Chianti might just be the most polarizing word in all of Italian wine. From an array of styles that fall somewhere between traditional and modern, to wines produced within vs without the Classico area between Florence and Siena (and don't get us started about the dreadful days of the "Fiasco") . Regardless, producers in the region are striving to distance themselves from the naysayers and make wines of distinction and character. Pieve de' Pitti's "Cerretello" encapsulates this effort beautifully, sourcing from their top vineyard, just outside the city of Pisa, and is objectively as classic and delicious as Chianti gets!

"Classic" Brunello di Montalcino is getting harder to define. New producers, French barrels, growing disparity between the North and South of the appellation all have lead to myriad styles. The vineyards of Fattoi, located on the central-southwest side of Montalcino, were planted as early as 1979, and the winemakers effortlessly combine a mix of traditional and modern vinification practices to create terroir driven, balanced, and structured wines. While Brunello styles may differ, the respect for the vintage is paramount among all estates. The wine serves anecdotally to show the power of naturally growing Tuscany's greatest grape in its purest form.

Brunello di Montalcino has risen to be the premier interpretation of Tuscan Sangiovese. At the Riserva level, it ranks among some of the highest aging requirements of any other table wine in the world. By law, it may not be released until the 6th year following harvest, and is mandated to mature in oak for a minimum of two years. Full in body, a Riserva designated Brunello expresses all the traditional flavors one expects from the varietal with an emphasis on black cherry, chocolate notes, and a dark earthiness. The resulting wine is a more pronounced, luxurious bottling that only the hill of Montalcino can provide.
