Tempranillo
Tempranillo is a grape varietal that it perfect for texas terroir. originally from Spain's rioja region, tempranillo thrives in the heat of the texas summer. pedernales creates a variety of tempranillos, & makes it the backbone of many of its red blends, including the exclusive wine club wines, block one & block two.
Texas Hill Country Tempranillo
The hill country tempranillo captures the unique qualities of tempranillo grown hear close to home, pulling fruit from our kuhlken vineyard as well as the parr vineyard of mason. The nose shows a smooth blending of blueberry, coffee, & caramel w/ added flavors of currant & smoke in the finish.
Tempranillo Reserve
The 2010 texas tempranillo reserve demonstrates once again why tempranillo is the single most important focus of our winemaking program. The 2010 vintage shows the characteristic cherry layered w/ notes of mineral & dark chocolate. It is a blend of several blocks of the estate vineyard, kuhlken vineyards.
Texas Tempranillo
The 2010 tempranillo delivers our characteristic balance of cherry & raspberry alongside a light minerality. There are also hints of chocolate & roasted almonds to round out the nose. The finish is smooth w/ ample body & a moderate acidity that trails out nicely on the palate.
Texas High Plains Tempranillo
The 2010 high plains tempranillo highlights the classic cherry & earthy notes of this spanish varietal w/ a silk & balanced finish. As far as we are concerned, tempranillo is the official red grape of texas, & this wine gives a taste of the excellent tempranillo fruit being grown on the high plains. The grapes for our high plains tempranillo are sourced from the reddy & bingham vineyards of the high plains. We are privileged to work w/ these top growers in the high plains where excellent sandy soils & cool evenings produce rich varietal character to this wine.
Red Blends
Pedernales cellars specializes in spanish & rhone style blends, & its selection of red blends reflects these styles of wines. The estate reserve wines are tempranillo blends that combine select fruit from the family vineyard w/ long aging in american & french oak. In addition, pedernales cellars makes the classic rhone blend of grenache, syrah, & mourvedre known as gsm.
Kuhlken Vineyards Reserve
The kuhlken vineyard reserve is a non-traditional blend intended to highlight the best of our estate vineyard for the vintage. The 2009 vintage is primarily a blend of tempranillo & merlot w/ small additions of cabernet sauvignon. The nose is strong w/ blackberry & dark chocolate as well as notes of pepper & leather. It has ample tannins & acidity & pairs up nicely w/ rich red meat dishes.
Block One
Block one is the lead in a series of small-lot vineyard blends produced for the pedernales wine club. it mirrors the blends typical of southern Spain based on the varietals tempranillo, mourvedre, & grenache. the 2011 edition features rich notes of blackberry, dark chocolate, & rose as well as hints of plum & lavender. the wine is complex & has a rich finish that makes it an excellent pairing for red meats & spicy dishes.
Family Reserve
The family reserve is a non-traditional blend in which the vineyards & varietals shift from year to year to showcase the particular strengths of each harvest. The 2010 vintage is a tempranillo blend drawing from the kuhlken estate vineyard in the hill country w/ compliments from the bingham & reddy vineyards of the high plains. The 2010 vintage is a bit of a departure from some past vintages in that is a lighter, more fruit forward edition than other years. This reflects its tempranillo composition & the strong fruit qualities present in the 2010 harvest. The nose conveys strong components of strawberry & vanilla w/ notes of truffle & hazelnut.
Gsm
The gsm from pedernales cellars is built in the tradition of a classic rhone red. The wine delivers a balance of blackberry, red currant & dark chocolate. The ample acidity & tannins provide for excellent mouth feel & a long finish.
Whites and Roses
Pedernales cellars focuses on white grape varietals well-suited to the texas climate. In particular, viognier a southern rhone varietal, & albarino, a spanish varietal, have proven perfect viticulture in the state. The pedernales cellars viognier was named "texas top wine" at the 2013 houston livestock show & rodeowine competition, & the reserve viognier won gold at the san francisco international wine competition. In addition to these renowned whites, pederanales cellars makes an award-winning dry rose perfect for sipping on a warm summer afternoon.
Viognier Reserve
The 2012 viognier reserve had a tough act to follow after its inaugural 2011 sister won gold at the san francisco international wine competition. She has risen to the challenge! As w/ our inaugural version, this viognier received hands on treatment throughout & new french oak for short cellaring. The nose on this vintage is a rich blend of honey, violet, & acacia w/ additional notes of cinnamon. On the palate you can detect vanilla, toast, & butter & an excellent balanced finish.
Dry Rose
The dry rose is intended to capture some the fruity nose of the garnacha varietal along w/ the deep cherry quality of tempranillo in a rosé style while also providing some of the body & finish that comes from malolactic & short oak aging. The nose includes cherry & strawberry w/ notes of vanilla & violet. The finish is light, but trails off nicely w/ a crispness that makes it a great wine w/ salads or even a light dessert.
Viognier
2012 is the 6th vintage for our viognier & continues our tradition of highlighting the intense aromas & flavors possible from a texas viognier. The nose bursts w/ peach, honeysuckle, & tropical fruit w/ notes of vanilla. The acidity & balance on the finish makes this an easy wine to pair.
Albarino
Albarino is a varietal well known in Spain for its ripe fruit & distinctive aroma. in particular, this vintage shows substantial peach & citrus aromas, as well as a touch of rose. the finish is clean w/ a light acidity.
Vino Blanco
Each year we recraft the mix & balance of varietals in the blend that makes up the vino blanco. The goal is to make a thoroughly enjoyable blend that highlights the range of fruit aromas possible in a texas white wine. The 2011 vino blanco delivers ripe citrus, apples, & pears on the nose, & a soft easy finish that makes this wine an easy pairing partner to a range of seafood & chicken dishes.
Dessert Wines
Pedernales cellars has recognized that the portugese varietals that make up port wines are ideal for the texas climate & soils. For this reason we have planted all of the traditional grapes that make up port: touriga nacionale, tinta amarella, tinta cao, & tempranillo. Our port program produces a new port each year that blends grapes from several vintages.
Bingham Vineyards Moscato Giallo
New in 2013 pedernales cellars has crafted a single vineyard dessert wine based on the Italian varietal moscato giallo. the fruit is sourced from the bingham family vineyard in the texas high plains.
Texas Ruby
The latest non-vintage ruby “port” is a traditional blend of portuguese varietals blending vintages ranging back to 2008. this edition is of a fruit forward “ruby” style presenting rick notes of blackberry, dark chocolate, & licorice w/ a sumptuous finish. The 18% alcohol & 3.5% residual sugars make this an ideal dessert pairing or after dinner treat.
