Save yourself some misery - get here 30 minutes early for your train.
Don Pepi Pizza (near the Krispy Kreme): cheap and good. A welcome surprise.
Getting in on Amtrak? Skip the line and catch a cab at the south east corner of 31st and 8th instead.
Need a taxi? Exit on the 8th Ave side and avoid the long line on the 7th Ave side.

One of the only express trains to huntington. Make sure you get to Penn by 6:20 to get a seat. It gets crowded!
Gotta go coffee and bagel from Zaro's. Best option by far.
most nyc cab drivers wouldn't be caught dead picking up a passenger straying from the penn station taxi stand lines, so don't waste time trying to find a cab, go straight to one of the two taxi stands
Hold your breath in the men's room - unless you enjoy the smell of BO and turds!
This place is busy as heck. Be ready to combat the crowds!
Take the Path Train instead. Even with parking it works out to about the same price and the Path runs every 5 mins or so.
Make sure you have a ticket already purchased before trying to enter the seating area. If not, security will not let you enter.
Gelato Gelato Gelato: Right in front of Rosa's Pizza. Served 24/7. Perfect when you're stuck there late at night.
Acela to Boston: wait downstairs and watch the arrival board for the arriving DC train w/ same number. Walk down and grab open seats before the crowds arrive.

Although it still gets crowded, it is usually faster to get on an evening train if you wait for track assignments in the Exit Corridor rather than main NJ Transit area.

Can't wait for the Farley Post Office to see this travesty of public transit be defunct and the Farley Post Office be the new Penn Station
Ram RajasekaranNovember 28, 2011If you end up waiting overnight at the Amtrak/NJ Transit waiting area, be prepared to be continuosly annoyed by an Amtrak automated message voiced by a lady who asks us to 'Be safe'.

LIRR trains typically use the same train tracks every day. No need to wait for the posting unless you're warned of track changes.
if you gotta eat, go to Moe's. burritos that are awesome, cheap, and you get free chips.
Cheapest place to get your diet coke fix is at the Krispy Kreme: $1.85 for 20oz bottle.
Catch NJ transit, lack of a waiting area and lack of good food
The LIRR women's restroom is cleaner than Amtrak's. Even better, grab a drink at Tracks and use theirs.
Believe me, it's not cool to talk on your phone while riding a train. You are in fact a complete asshole.
If you step on a banker walking up the stairs in the morning, compliment his toupee graciously
