Afternoon Tea Etiquette‎

The tradition of afternoon tea is over 150 years old and there is much debate as to how it should be served. We detail some etiquette suggestions below for you amusement and curiosity.

Sugar and Lemon

Sugar is placed in cup first, then thinly sliced lemon, but never milk and lemon together!

Eat with Fingers Neatly

The correct order when eating afternoon tea is to eat savories first, followed by scones and sweets to finish.

Correct Holding of Cup

Do not put your pinky ‘up’ as this is incorrect. A guest should look into the teacup when drinking, never over it.

Napkin

The word napkin derives from the old French word ‘naperon’, meaning ‘little tablecloth’. unfold the napkin on your lap. if you must leave temporarily place your napkin on your chair.

Milk After Tea

There is much debate, but milk should be added to your tea last. the habit of putting milk in tea originated in France. “to put milk in your tea before sugar is to cross the path of love, perhaps never to marry.” (a tea superstition)

Proper Placement of Spoon

The spoon should always be placed behind the cup on the saucer. Never leave the spoon in the cup.
