Where to get a slice or pie in the East Village of Manhattan. Friends, add to this. Except Jorge, who is an Artichoke hater.
1. Artichoke Basille’s Pizza
Jon Steinback: Their artichoke slice is amazing; creamy and filling, could, on a light night, be split between two. Anything else here is second best.
2. South Brooklyn Pizza
Jon Steinback: Great artisanal slice. A little pricey (in the four-dollar range), but fresh ingredients and lots of olive oil (not grease).
3. Stromboli Pizza
Jon Steinback: Best greasy slice in the East Village. Skip 1 slice for $2.75 and go straight for the 2 slices for $5 (with a free soda).
4. Motorino
Jon Steinback: Best sit-down pizza in the East Village (and probably Manhattan). An ambitious eater can down a whole pie, so get a couple different ones for your table.
5. Lil' Frankie's
Jon Steinback: A bit overrated, but solid sit-down pizza pies if you can't get into Motorino (on 11th)
6. Two Boots East Village
Jon Steinback: Corn-meal crust is often good, especially when paired with their toppings. Good creative vegetarian slices.
7. Ray's Pizza
Jon Steinback: Pizza of last resort. But good cheap coffee and bagels in the morning.
8. Luzzo's
Madeleine Root: The Tartufata pizza is the best thing in NYC. Mmmm, truffles.
