I went to the Whitney Museum of American Art to see the exhibition ''Archibald Motley: Jazz Age Modernist.'' I found myself spellbound by a nightclub scene: a vivid tableau of dancing couples, so close to the band a trombone's slide stretches out between three people as to appear in a tangle. Another couple can be glimpsed seated at a table, a glass of wine in front of the woman and a cocktail (it looks like a Manhattan) set before her date. I was surprised to see that Motley named the painting ''Blues.'' The heavy-souled sadness I associate with that music seems at odds with the image but Motley must have known it was in there, too.
