Bcds
Even your BCD needs to be serviced now and then. Don't wait until it gives out on you. Bring it in with your regulator for an annual inspection -- we'll check the bladder for leaks, the inflator for proper inflation, and make sure that the dump valves operate properly.
Dive Computers
Your dive computer needs attention every now and then. Usually it's just a replacement battery, but even if it needs more, we can take care of it so it can take care of you. Those of you who own a Suunto computer, we are one of a select few factory-authorized regional service centers in the United States.
Dive Regulators

Pressurizing the System and Immersing in Water to Check for Leaks
Checking the Second Stage Opening Effort

Oh, and we rent tanks too! Call for pricing and availability at (562) 434-1604. At Deep Blue Scuba we can handle anything you need done to your dive tank including:
Air Fills
Hydrostatic Testing & Tumbling
Cylinders must be hydrostatically tested every 5 years. The month and year are stamped into the metal when the cylinder passes the test. If your cylinder doesn't have a stamp dated within the last 5 years, we'll send it out to our trusted partner, Spectrum Gas, and have it tested.
Visual Inspections
Your cylinder needs to have a current visual inspection sticker on it in order to be filled at a dive shop or on a boat. These inspections must be performed every year. If yours is out of date, we can check it for you.
Diy Dive Gear Maintenance
While every piece of gear does come with manufacturer's suggestions to maintain the life & longevity of your equipment here are a few things that we recommend in addition to regular professional servicing:
Bc Wash-Out Hose
Simplest way to rinse the inside of your BC with fresh water.
Zip Care
The ultimate in zipper care for wetsuits and suitcases, designed to remove sand, dirt and salt deposits that can make a zipper stick.
Uv Tech
Powerful sun protection formula shields all kinds of materials from harmful UV rays to prevent fading fabrics, deteriorating rubber and discolored fiberglass.
Wetsuit & Drysuit Shampoo
Works fast to remove organic residues like algae and bacteria, plus chlorine and salt deposits-so your neoprene gear smells fresher, stays supple and lasts much longer.
Mirazyme
A powerful blend of natural enzymes and microbes that quickly and easily eliminates odors.
Zip Tech
High performance lubricant for waterproof zippers in wetsuits, drysuits and more. Protects against salt, chlorine, rust and corrosion, as well as repelling dirt, sand and organic residues - so zippers last a lot longer.
Bc Life

How Do I Book a Free Swim Evaluation?
Booking is easy. Simply call us at 562.434.1644 to arrange a convenient date and time.
What Age Should I Start My Child in Swimming Lessons?
There is no set age, however we recommend all parents begin their child's swimming journey at a very early age. The earlier a child is introduced to water, the less chance they have of developing a fear of the water. According to the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) , "Children need to learn to swim." And, "new evidence shows that children 1 to 4 may be less likely to drown if they have had formal swimming instruction."
Which Days of the Week Are Swim Lessons Offered?
Deep Blue Swim School is conveniently open for swim lessons Monday through Friday 9:00a.m.-6:30p.m. and Saturday from 8:30a.m.-2:30p.m.
When Should I Feel Confident Leaving My Child in a Pool On Their Own?
Never! Accidents can happen around pools all the time, even to great swimmers. Parents and caregivers should always supervise children.
What Are the Advantages of Formal Swim Lessons?
Although it is possible to teach your children how to swim on your own, often times children are more susceptible to learning in a formal setting. Not only will kids progress at a faster rate, but they will also learn the correct technique without developing bad habits.
When Should Swim Goggles Be Used?
To speed up the learning process, we advise the use of goggles when teaching new or challenging swimming skills. Goggles stop eyes getting irritated, allowing the child to swim longer and in comfort. The goggles also relax the child due to the ability to see where they are going, with targets becoming clearer. However for safety, children must learn to swim without goggles. We recommend removing the goggles from time to time and see if children can perform the activities without them. Another good rule is to use goggles in lessons, and take them off in free or play time.
How Long Will It Take to Teach My Child How to Swim?
The answer depends on the individual child and what your goals are. Be open to the lessons and your instructor's comments and you will get your answer. Like anything your child learns – the more they practice the more they will progress.
Why Choose a Usssa Member School?
The United States Swim School Association (USSSA) is a world class organization with members that are dedicated to providing quality swimming lessons. USSSA members have the opportunity to educate themselves at least three times a year at workshops and conferences. Members are educated on the latest and best techniques for teaching children how to swim.
How Do I Book Swim Lessons?
Booking swim lessons is easy. Here are some options: Sign Up Now; Call us at 562.434.1644; Email us at swim@deepbluelongbeach.com; Send us a Facebook message at Deep Blue Swim School
What If My Child's Scared? Should I Wait Until They Are Older to Start Swimming Lessons?
In the majority of cases, no. Often the fear becomes more entrenched the older the child becomes. Addressing the problem properly with a strategy will get them swimming and teach them the invaluable life lesson that difficult tasks can be overcome with hard work and patience. This does not mean we force a child to swim. We gradually get students used to being in and around water, then use a step-by-step technique to build confidence in a fun and gentle progression.
Do I Need to Get Into the Pool with My Child?
Only during our beginning level Parent & Me group sessions, does a parent get in the water with their baby or toddler (ages 3 months to 18 months) . Parents with children enrolled in our private one-on-one swimming lessons, do not get into the pool. Private swimming lessons are far more effective with a student-teacher environment.
How Often Should My Child Attend Swimming Lessons?
Deep Blue recommends that children swim minimally at least once per week on a year-round basis. Consistency, combined with quality instruction, is the most important piece in your child's learn-to-swim experience. With consistency, all children will learn to love their swim lessons and become safe and confident swimmers as a result.
Are Floatation Devices (Floaties) a Good Idea for Children Learning to Swim?
We encourage parents to not use floatation devices while in the water. If used too often, floatation devices give children a false sense of security; they will rely upon the floaties and avoid developing proper swimming techniques. This becomes dangerous if the child ends up falling into a pool or jumping in without their floatation device. Any device that encourages an upright body position (water wings) only slows down the learning process, and is, therefore, a negative. Children need to learn the habit of placing their eyes into the water and creating a horizontal body position when swimming. Flotation devices can be great fun, however we caution against using them every time your child swims to the point where they depend on them. Good practice is to use floaties only for playtime in the water and to take time out to practice swimming.
Why Can Some Kids Swim Well While Others Struggle? My Daughter Is Brilliant and My Son Is Terrible.
Everyone is born with varying abilities. Some of the things which influence swimming ability include: Co-ordination; Strength; Bone density (buoyancy) ; Balance; Relaxation; Fine motor skills; History or past experience in and around water. Anyone can learn the basics of swimming and water safety, but like anything, some will find it easier than others.
How Long Do Most People Keep Their Children in Swimming Lessons?
Once a child learns the basics of how to swim there are many advantages to keeping them in an ongoing program. Swimming is one of the best physical activities you can have your child take part in and your child will continue to learn and become more comfortable and confident in the water. Not to mention it is FUN and having a solid swimming foundation will lead to an enhanced lifestyle. Swimming opens the door to many activities your child may want to take part in like competitive swimming, water polo, snorkeling, scuba diving, junior lifeguards, surfing, water skiing, wake boarding, and kite surfing just to name a few.

About Us
Deep Blue's History
Where It All Began...
Recreational Scuba Diving Was Born in Southern California and the Underwater Sports Shop Was One of the First Dive Shops in the Country.
Originally located at 5914 Second Street, it graced the cover of Skin Diver magazine's February 1956 issue. In 1959, proprietor Bill Hogan moved his store to the foot of the then newly-rebuilt Belmont Shore Pier where our shop remains to this day.
Tom Murray, the Next Owner, Changed the Name to Pacific Sporting Goods and Owned the Shop for the Next 31 Years.
Tom made his mark in the freediving and hunting community and became known as one of the most knowledgeable repair technicians around.
Bill Hogan Sold the Shop to a Man Named Sam Lecocq - a Former Colleague of Diving Pioneer Jacques Cousteau.
Sam held many early SCUBA patents, among them the aluminum scuba cylinder and the "WaterLung" – the first single-hose regulator. During this period (circa 1962) , the father of one of the current owners was certified in this shop's very same pool.
In 2010, Tom Murray Sold the Place to Jacquie Ferneau-Hall and Her Husband Jonathan, a Certified Scuba Instructor.
Under their ownership the name was changed to Deep Blue Scuba and Swim Center - utilizing the pool to teach swim lessons to hundreds of children while developing an emphasis of being not just a local scuba shop, but a Center where divers and swimmers can do everything from purchase needed equipment, to taking classes, and having their gear serviced. It's also a place where customers can ask questions, mingle, make friends, plan trips, and perhaps most importantly – begin an aquatic adventure – all in one friendly, helpful environment.
Facility
Facility
Though different shops with different philosophies, our location has housed a dive shop for decades. Hundreds upon hundreds of students have passed through our doors, swum in our pool, and left a changed person.
Where Deep Blue Goes Deep Green
Here at Deep Blue we spend a lot of time playing out in our environment. And we know that our actions as a business impact where we spend so much of our time when we aren't in the shop. As such, we try to negatively impact the world as much as possible (and we're always looking for more ways to do that); here are some of the things we're doing that:
Ozone Pool
Having a pool on site creates many great advantages to both scuba classes and swim classes. However, it can also be a drain on resources. We have an ozone-sanitized pool. Ozone is a most effective cleaning agent - produced from air. It is more effective than chlorine, producing only non-harmful debris and oxygen as its only byproducts. We use only the minimum amount of chlorine as mandated by the health code drinking water standards.
Neoprene Recycling Center
There are a lot of discarded wetsuits just sitting in landfills. Now there's a way to recycle them into new and interesting products. So if you've been holding onto that old suit because you didn't want to toss it, bring it by and we'll have it recycled for you.
Florescent & Led Lighting
By now, most people know that florescent lights use require less energy than their incandescent counterparts. So most of our lighting is florescent or compact florescent. However, we also use LED lighting throughout the store – they last longer and use even less energy than fluorescents.
Aquarium Materials
The aquarium that is the centerpiece of floor has only been there since November of 2012. However, the aquarium itself has been around for many years prior to that.
Battery Recycling Center
As one of the only Suunto Computer Repair Centers, we go through a lot of batteries. Instead of throwing them all in the trash, we collect and send them out for recycling.
Original, Refurbished, Acid Stained Floor
When Pacific Sporting Goods became Deep Blue Scuba and Swim Center the shop was basically gutted. As much of the original architecture that could be salvaged was, including the cement floor that was acid-stained creating the unique, ever lasting effect that you see today.
Waste Materials
In addition to recycling bottles and cans, all of our waste is taken by Serv-Wel Disposal and Recycling to SERRF where they check for toxic materials and recyclable materials before burning it. During that process they generate enough electricity to power the plant and sell the excess to Southern California Edison. The waste steam is condensed and recycled back through the boilers while the waste ash is back-end recycled and used as road base materials at local landfills.
Dive Against Debris
As local divers, we're very aware of the debris and pollution that enters our waters from the San Gabriel & LA Rivers –as well as our own beaches- so we hold bi-monthly Project AWARE Dive Against Debris dives by the Belmont Pier. Every dive we've sorted and logged the debris, and this has started to paint a picture of how much debris enters our waters. Having collected over 150 pounds of debris so far we've realized it's going to be a constant battle to keep our waters clean and are excited about giving people the opportunity to participate in their community with these regular outings and free rentals.

Afterwards we head to a local beach to work on entries and exits for about an hour. The following Saturday or Sunday we take a boat out to Catalina where we continue to run Rescue Drills. Time permitting, we may even get a fun dive or two in! *You must have current First Aid & CPR Training to take the Rescue Course (Emergency First Responder course covers this) .

Master Scuba Diver – the Top Recreational Certification
Master Scuba Diver – the Top Recreational Certification
Want to call yourself "Master?" Okay, that was rhetorical; who doesn't? The Master Scuba Diver rating is the highest rating a PADI recreational diver can achieve. In order to accomplish this rating, you must have completed Open Water, Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, have earned five specialty ratings, and logged at least 50 dives – and while that may sound like a lot, we can help you through every step of the way. Give us a call at (562) 434-1604, send us an email or stop on by the shop.

Unlike most courses, the course's schedule is rather flexible. In fact, other than a few set dates, you are the person that determines how long the course takes. Depending upon your schedule and availability, this course typically takes between 2 months and one year to complete.
Divemaster
The first step in your professional journey begins at Divemaster level. If you want to be there as people begin their Discover Scuba Diving experience for the first time or lead them through your favorite underwater exploration, this rating is for you. As a PADI Divemaster, you can manage divers on a dive boat, lead divers at a resort, assist instructors, teach diving refreshers and even introduce non-divers to the underwater world during a Discover Scuba Diving course!

Just for Kids
Snorkeling
Once your kids are comfortable in the water, the next step is to get them breathing through a snorkel. They already want to spend all of their time figuring out what's under the surface; this way they don't have to hold their breath! Our 90-minute clinic gets them comfortable using a mask, snorkel, and fins. Our snorkeling clinics are $50/person and covers the pool time and instruction (does not include their own mask, snorkel, and fins) . We do carry snorkeling sets recommended for children and as a student in the snorkeling session, you do get a discount! Snorkeling clinics can be scheduled for the whole family at the same time!
Seal Team
For those 8-10 year olds who have completed their Bubblemaker course, we offer Seal Team courses. The child who excelled at blowing bubbles may want to do these extra five "challenges" – each of which comprises of a Seal Team "Mission". After completing each of the five missions they can move on to become underwater "Specialists" in different scuba fields. This is an exciting way to teach valuable skills while having fun!
Bubblemaker...Kids First Step to Scuba
The next step on your child's aquatic scuba journey would be the Bubblemaker course! As young as age 8, this course introduces kids to the world of scuba diving! Our well-qualified and trained scuba instructors are comfortable teaching in the open ocean, but this course takes place in our indoor, heated pool. The two-hour course costs $100 and includes all materials, instruction and equipment rental (does not include mask, snorkel and fins) . So if your little one is excited about finding Nemo or discovering treasures, this is how they get started! It's the perfect birthday gift or fun playdate with your child and their friends.
Boy Scouts of America Merit Badge
Interested in earning the Scuba Diving Merit Badge? One of the requirements for it is to obtain an Open Water certification - we can do that! You also have to obtain First Aid and CPR training - we can do that too! Simply, put together a group of boys and we can work around your schedule and needs. With a Boy Scout Counselor on staff, we can be your one-stop shop for all of your BSA needs!
Deep Blue Dive Club
Need Buddies to Dive With?
The Deep Blue Divers meet at 7pm on the first Thursday of every month at Deep Blue. We generally have a speaker (who talks about their area of interest in the marine world and how we can get involved) , food, drinks, and a raffle – as well as a lot of fun. Deep Blue Divers are the first to hear about upcoming trips and specials, and are always given the best deals. So how do you become a member? You just show up! No membership fees or annual dues.
As a Club, We Go On a Fun Dive And/or Underwater Cleanup Dive Every Month!
Dive Sites
With any dive site, you should check the conditions online prior to diving and then visually check them once you are at the location. While we will try to keep this list updated, please note that hours, parking, closures, etc may be different than listed. Diving is inherently risky, please use good judgment on every dive.

Scuba Faqs
How Old Do I Need to Be to Learn to Dive?
Anyone age 10 and over can learn to scuba dive. There are restrictions for 10 & 11 year olds (and an additional $50 fee) , but there is no upper age limit.
I Understand Part of the Training Is in the Pool. What's Your Pool Like?
We have an ozone-treated (meaning - no strong chemicals burning your eyes) , 92 degree, indoor pool. It's 9 feet deep in the deep end, 2.5 feet in the shallow, and 44 feet long - letting us do all skills with ease and comfort.
Are There Any Additional Or Hidden Costs in Your Courses?
Nope! We don't hide or add additional costs. All costs are out in the open and discussed up front. We are proud of our reputation as being honest and fair with customers. The few classes that have additional gear needs (i.e. Open Water, Advanced, Divemaster) all have any additional costs plainly stated in their descriptions and we would be happy to clarify any questions. As you compare course prices, please make sure you check for those additional or hidden costs. We don't charge extra for rentals, air fills, certifications, pool time, boat tickets (unless noted) , or food on our boats. At Deep Blue we constantly strive to create a fun, trust-filled community (after all, we belong to this community too) , and we work hard to earn that trust. So no, we're not trying to trick you out of your money.
How Many Students Are in the Courses?
Most of our courses are allowed to have 8 people in them. However, we cap our classes at 6 people. If there's a person 11 years or younger, we cap the class at 4. This way, each student gets plenty of attention and has lots of fun.
When Do You Dive Off of Boats and When Do You Do Beach Dives?
It changes for every class. Some classes never dive off a boat (unless you'd like to purchase a boat ticket) while some classes never dive off the beach (Boat Diver Specialty can't really be completed from the beach) . Some classes are mixed (during basic Open Water certification, we'd prefer you do boat AND beach dives - we train for our students to be amazing and safe scuba divers and we think that training is important. Let us know where you want to dive and we can make it happen - there are amazing dive sites all over!
