Aldi is the more frugal cousin of Trader Joe's. Aldi in Germany is divided into two divisions, Aldi North and Aldi South. Aldi North operates as Trader Joe's in the U.S. while Aldi South is just Aldi.
To encourage people to return their own shopping cart (instead of hiring employees to collect carts from the parking lot) you insert a quarter to get a cart & get the quarter back when you return it.
The carts use a system whereby you use a quarter to unlock the carts and the grocery bags they sell are super cheap. They have some major brands but most will be their own brand.
Its not the worst place to go, but they don't have the best quality in produce or the best prices. Might be worth going to if you only need a couple items and want to avoid crowds at other stores.
This is the worst grocery store concept I've seen. They charge $0.25 to use a cart. The selection is mostly house brands. You bag your own groceries, if you don't have a bag, they'll sell you one!
