The view is absolutely jaw-dropping, and the 10mi round-trip hike is certainly worth it! Moderate/Intermediate for middle-aged people. s/o Terry Shipley, the McAfee ranger; he was a great help to us
The parking lot for those interested in hiking McAfee Knob is located off VA-311/Catawba Valley Road at the top of Catawba Mountain. Park in the gravel lot and then cross the road to join the trail.
This is an AWESOME hike. I am not in the best shape and I was able to make it. LONGER but EASIER than sharp top and the views, The best I have seen. BRING YOURCAMERA. however BE CAREFUL!
It's a nice view. Bring plenty of water and food. You will need the energy. Also, please be VERY careful when at the actual knob itself, please don't end up killing yourself.
Bring bug spray! I don't know if it was today's particular conditions, but we were covered by a swarm of gnats at the rocks and it made the trip not very enjoyable.
