This is a magical place. From the Castle Esplanade to the Palace of Holyroodhouse just oozes character and history. See if you can locate the "Heart of Midlothian" A clue: it's near St. Giles Cath.

Take one of the countless free tours. Or just pick a direction, walk, and don't be afraid to get lost down one of the side streets.

Look at the Castle at the top if the Royal Mile - try for about 1pm because that's when they fire the gun each day. Then walk down the royal mile &make sure you go down a few closes and look up lots

Start at the bottom of the Royal Mile (at the Scottish Parliament) because it's a good way to start quietly before encountering the masses in the center and top.

Look for the City Chambers time capsule in the cobblestones near the crossing at George IV Bridge. It's under a golden brick and inside the capsule is a picture of me!

Good luck avoiding the massive crowds. If you haven't memorized the tune Scotland the Brave piped out by pipers dotting the mile, you must be dreaming.
