For international friends, a list of places I like in Oslo. Warning: I no longer live in Oslo, so if any of these establishments have gone south since I last visited, it can't be helped.
Marius Watz: Great burgers at a pretty decent price, with a menu of different choices that don't just consist in changing the sauce or adding a slice of bacon. Mouth-watering. I'm a fan already.
Marius Watz: Fresh pizza made with fresh ingredients and decently priced, pretty good for a beer joint that in a previous life used to be a hangout for neo-Nazis (thankfully, that's ancient history.)
Tapas Restaurant · Grünerløkka øst · 71 tips and reviews
Marius Watz: Sometimes insanely busy, but great tapas at decent prices. Great for lunch or mid-afternoon food breaks, avoid the evening rush and weekends.
Thai Restaurant · Homensbyen · 14 tips and reviews
Marius Watz: Good Thai isn't plentiful in Oslo, but Plah delivers the goods. Quite a bit more upscale than your typical Thai joint, so don't go if you just want to score some quick carbohydrates.
Marius Watz: Delicious cocktail bar with impeccably courteous bartenders. The venue itself is draped in plants, including the herbs they use in the drinks.
Marius Watz: One of the only fish'n'chip outlets in Oslo, located in an old fish market that is now a new fish market. (Norwegians went through a non-fish phase, but now it's been re-branded.)
Marius Watz: Classic spot for art and socializing, in a gem of functionalist architecture. Now with excellent pizza from Lofthus Samvirkelag. Weekend evening crowds ramp up the artiness.
Marius Watz: As cute as coffee shop / cocktail bar hybrids come, Fuglen stops just short of being nauseatingly authentic. Berlin slash cosmopolitan hipster feel with zest of Norway.
Marius Watz: Fuck mixology, you just need cocktails. Robinet does the best cocktails in town. And no nonsense. (It's also small enough that you might be forced to make new friends.)
Marius Watz: Building is from the 1600's, with a great big fireplace and cozy interior. Nice and quiet, it's perfect for a civilized cup of coffee but no guarantees on the food.
Marius Watz: Tourist kitsch slash eccentric date option, worth it for the view (esp. from the men's room, believe it or not.) Decent cocktails for indecent prices. Visit once or go to impress a date.
