Cromwell ordered this, the oldest bronze statue in Britain, to be melted down, but it was hidden and reappeared in 1660. It is the point from which all distances from London are measured.
This was originally built as a secret observation post for the police, to spy on rallies and demonstrations held in Trafalgar Square. It had a direct telephone link to Scotland Yard.
