I've been to only maybe two hundred of the twenty thousand restaurants New York City has to offer, but I can guarantee that eating at the places listed below will make your belly happy.
310 Malcolm X Blvd (btwn W 125th & W 126th St), New York, NY
Southern Food Restaurant · 552 tips and reviews
Joyful Belly: One of the best restaurant atmospheres - warm, friendly, full of noise and yet intimate at the same time. Some of the best chicken and waffles I've had.
Joyful Belly: The single best Greek restaurant in New York City and possibly anywhere outside of Greece. Authentic as it gets. Full of soul in the best way possible.
Joyful Belly: The star is the Mezza Luna Ravioli, and rightfully so - a singular dish, for certain. But also try the fried calmari - birght, crisp, and not weighed down by grease.
Joyful Belly: The best tortillas in NYC, hands-down - made in-house, using old-school technique. You can buy the raw masa or tortillas by the pound to bring home with you.
38 E 19TH St (btwn Park Ave S & Broadway), New York, NY
Mexican Restaurant · Flatiron District · 280 tips and reviews
Joyful Belly: Justified Hipness. New twists on a classic cuisine. Grilled maitake mushrooms with goat cheese were spectacular, but the kitchen's emphasis on fresh ingredients render recommendations moot.
American Restaurant · Union Square · 52 tips and reviews
Joyful Belly: My favorite meal in NYC. The Sea Urchin Carbonara is a must try dish. The refined french technique and cuisine of the michelin star elite at a fraction the cost. NYC's most underrated by far.
Taiwanese Restaurant · East Village · 293 tips and reviews
Joyful Belly: Those little baos will be the death of me. Light, chewy but soft as a cloud, and bursting with flavor. If you've never had a pork bun, put down what you're doing and go get one.
171 1st Ave (btwn E 10th & E 11th St), New York, NY
Ramen Restaurant · East Village · 848 tips and reviews
Joyful Belly: David Chang's flagship is still putting out some of the best ramen in the city (although he has more competition than when he began) - the pork buns are excellent, and the veggie ramen is spectacular.
American Restaurant · Greenwich Village · 621 tips and reviews
Joyful Belly: I would say that Minetta has the best burger in New York, but that's sort of like saying that the space shuttle is the best car. The Black label burger is competing on a different level.
Mexican Restaurant · Lower East Side · 198 tips and reviews
Joyful Belly: Not everything is great, but the Mole Wings for dinner are next level, and the burritos they serve for lunch are the best I've had in the city.
97A Hoyt St (btwn Atlantic Ave & Pacific St), Brooklyn, NY
Sandwich Spot · Boerum Hill · 314 tips and reviews
Joyful Belly: The Smoked meat sandwich is as pure of a love letter to Deli food as I've ever had. What they are able to do to beef is just breathtaking.
