The first eight listings are worth the detour. Almost everything else is in downtown Tucson's historic district, can be easily seen in a day, and is skippable if you're pressed for time.

Mary McGurn: Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes. You can also see some of the 4,000 military and civilian aircraft by driving along the fence on Kolb Road by the Davis-Monthan Air Force Base.
Mary McGurn: Don't miss the Nightly Observing Program which is an opportunity for amateurs to take a peak through the mammoth research telescopes. It was one of the coolest things that I did in 2011.
Mary McGurn: Try the daily sampler (El Plato Poca Cosa) with three dishes selected by the chef. Wash the delicious gourmet Mexican food down with one of the margaritas.

Mary McGurn: Near the fountains in the center of the convention center complex is the historic Sosa-Carillo-Frémont House, an adobe structure built in the 1850s.
Mary McGurn: Built in 1896 and modeled after a Mexican cathedral, this cathedral incorporates symbols of the Arizona desert -- the horned toad, the saguaro, and the yucca -- above the door, next to St. Augustine.
