Second Annual BBQ Battle!
Saturday, august 31 (12pm – 4pm)
BBQ Battle
On labour day weekend, the south patio at river market will be the battleground for four brave BBQ teams. There will be fire, there will be sharp implements, there will be barbecue sauce and we need you to judge the winner. This year, the battle will be waged by last year’s champion tre galli gelato caffe, against crepe des amis, donald’s market and wild rice. They’ll be duking it out for bragging rights and a shiny first place ribbon. Who will have the best flavours? Who will be the most entertaining? Come down to the patio and be the judge! For a minimum donation of $2 you can taste all that these talented folks whip up and the donations go to royal city farmers market. First food to see battle action will be chicken starting at 12:00pm, then we move onto veggies at 1:30 pm, then the final round salmon, at 3:00 pm. Over the course of the day watch teams drop from the chopping block, as there can be only one.
Music Box Presents… King of the Ukulele Show & Jam with Ralph Shaw
Saturday, august 31 (12:30pm – 2:30pm)
Join ralph for a performance by the king himself, then bring your ukulele and join for a free 30 minute all ages ukulele jam of summer hits from 2-2:30pm
Ralph shaw is an unparalleled showman with a knack for engaging an audience. Ralph has a long and diverse resume behind him and you’re as likely to see him performing for royalty as headlining a stage show, delighting visitors at international festivals (canada, USA, australia, U.K., europe) or leading his monthly get-together of over 100 ukulele strummers in his home city of vancouver, B.C. Ralph has previously released 3 albums, 4 ukulele instructional dvds and a critically acclaimed book: the ukulele entertainer, all of which have delighted and transformed fans as well as thousands of new ukulele players.

In this hands-on session with artist rebecca graham, kids can explore the ingenious ways that bugs and birds use the plants and other materials around them to create shelter and camouflage.
Make patterns with rubbings on paper, or try your hand at weaving using all natural materials diverted from green waste.
No pre-registration necessary. Ideal for kids aged 3-12, but all are welcome!
Artstarts at river market, sponsored by donald’s market one prize, is a free workshop series featuring free, fun, 45-minute, culturally diverse workshops with some of the best children’s artists!
Dan kocurek and christine eggert’s programs have been hailed as “musically provocative, presented with charm and a deliciously human touch” and encompass repertoire from the passion and lyricism of the 19th-century ‘cello repertoire (played on a custom 4-valve flugelhorn), to the swing and swagger of jazz and the fiendish virtuosity and fire of the tango.
This year, re-up BBQ’s annual labour day party moves to the upper floor of river market — which offers the most spectacular views of the fraser river. The re-up team will be serving slow smoked pork, beef brisket, housemade sausages, plus appies, sides and dessert. The bar will be stocked with wines from sponsor road 13 vineyards, plus a variety of summer beers from parallel 49 brewing company. While guests are noshing, they’ll enjoy music by river market’s resident dj gabsung lim, roving performances by the vancouver circus school, beach party games, and meat draws that go above and beyond the average legion raffle.
This year, the proceeds from the bar and the meat draws will be going to new westminster city councillor chuck puchmayr’s charity, a beef with hunger. Puchmayr raises natural, grassfed cattle on a small farm on barnsten island and donates the beef to recovery houses, the food bank and organizations like honour house that often have difficulty accessing fresh and ethical meat. Take transit, have a few drinks and help purchase some more cattle for a beef with hunger.
Tickets are 50 each. Buy yours here or purchase at the restaurant.

Are you curious? This past june, river market held its inaugural curious flea market. It was such a huge success, we decided to get curious all over again…but bigger and better!
Come satisfy your curiosity with a myriad of vendors selling choice wares ranging from antique to mid-century modern to 50′s kitsch to upcycled furniture and decor. This isn’t your usual bargain basement flea market, but rather a treasure hunter’s dream.
Many flea markets can feel gloomy and transactional. Customers get in and get out as quickly as possible. What we are hosting is a social flea…the social shopping event of the season where customers are invited to hangout, engage and explore!
What makes curious flea extra curious?
Battle of the curious. Do you have the weirdest, strangest most curious thing in your closet? Bring it to curious flea! The most curious object will be immortalized forever in our curious hall of fame, and the winner will receive a fabulously curious prize!
Jenny cashin and mid century modern home. Jenny is the owner of mid century modern home at river market. Mid century modern home has quality vintage products that are beautifully restored, refreshed, reupholstered and refinished–ready for another generation of enjoyment. The best form of recycling! As our onsite expert, she’s key in helping us get the most unique experienced vendors and helping new vendors learn and grow.
New westminster. New westminster is a city steeped in history. We are ‘the royal city’…given our name by queen victoria herself. As we’re grounded in our history, we know a thing or two about antiques, vintage and all things cool. Curious flea will be held in support of the vendors on antique alley (make sure you check out the antique alley table) and we are encouraging the flea market attendees to go shop the alley to complete their day. We also have other local vendors from uptown, downtown and quayside showcasing their wares.
Fabulous food. Most flea markets are in dusty halls, church basements – ours is not. What more can we say? Award-winning restaurants. Music. Boardwalk. Park. Washrooms.
Make sure to follow curious flea on facebook for information on items for sale, updates on vendors and more.
