Puccini no doubt drew on his own student escapades – which anticipated his later reputation as a legendary bon viveur – for the robust humor of the comic scenes. And in his depiction of the tender & ultimately tragic love between Mimì (Maija Kovalevska) & Rodolfo (Rolando Villazón) Puccini achieved an immediacy, warmth & humanity that have rarely been equaled.

Everyman's journey

Lydia is at a turning point in her life. We experience life through Lydia’s expressive face & reflective diary entries, her daily routines at the Little Heaven orphanage for children living w/ HIV, her conversations w/ other children there, her doctors’ appointments, & her exercise, study, & prayer. Despite being abandoned by their families or left alone when their parents died, the children form a new family, together w/ their caretakers. Their HIV status is always in the background, but small victories show us a life that is full of hope­, not despair.

grapples w/ the trauma that grips all Cambodia: the struggle to forgive in the face of immeasurable anger.

Esmeralda, Quasimodo, Frollo & Phoebus: four great characters around which a highly dramatic, passionate story revolves. The Corps de Ballet underscores the dynamics almost like an ancient choir. And in the background is the silent but incumbent presence of the cathedral, both witness & actress in this drama.
