A beautiful peaceful cemetery that looks like a park. The monuments of many deceased figures of politics or literature/poetry are pieces of architectural art. A wonderful walk without a dark ambience.

Take a photo of the map at the entrance and then plan your route. The graves you are seeking are sometimes hard to find so don't be afraid to step into the narrow paths between the plots.

Many famous figures lie in this cemetery, from Jim Morrison, to Chopin, to Oscar Wilde. Try to go on a sunny day and up to the hill to the summit for a beautiful view of Père Lachaise and the city.

Pleasant walk around the leafy alleys. The visit can be very educational if you fancy to look up on the net for all those great personas who have been buried here through the years.

Have a map or you will get lost. Plans are at each entrance. A lot of famous people like Jim Morrison, Edith Piaf, Claude Debussy, Oscar Wilde, JeanJacques Rousseau. An hour visit is nothing here.

    Been here 100+ times
Due to high Vigipirate level, most doors are closed. Eg: the one next to the Père-Lachaise metro. Porte de la Réunion is only open in the morning from 8h/8h30/9h until 9h30, then from 16h-17h30.

Organize your trip before entering. This cemetery is like a labyrinth...the risk is to waist a great amount of time with poor results at the end. Take a map!!!!

You really need a map. I didn't find a free map at the entrance, so I took a photo of someone's map with my phone. It doesn't help much, though. Do some research on the internet before you go there.

At the main entrance you can get, free of charge, the 2 plans of the cemetery. Don't buy from the flower shop. Don't get only only one, as it's incomplete.

The trend for famous grave sites was started as a marketing strategy in the 19th century, to get more people to be buried here (it obviously worked!)
