東海道本線所属の鉄道駅。遠鉄バスの系統もここから発着するものがある(浜松市以外ではここのみとなった)。また、発着こそ無くなったが、JRの貨物駅としても磐田駅は存在している。その関係なのか、駅南側にある貸駐車場がJR貨物の子会社が管理しています。
