九十九里沿岸には亀にまつわる伝承や史跡が多い。亀といえば鶴だが、鶴にまつわる何かは存在しないのだろうか。思い当たったのが八鶴湖だ。結論からいえば鶴の伝承と湖の命名とは関係なさそうだが、一年を通じて美しい景観と大きすぎないサイズ感がわれわれに憩いのひとときを与えてくれる。ところで、雄蛇ヶ池に対して和泉ヶ池を「雌蛇ヶ池」とする伝承があるらしい。今はそのことが気になっている。
