The CSS Chattahoochee, a steam-powered sailing ship built to protect Columbus, Georgia, during the Civil War, was sunk by Confederate Naval officers in April 1865. Watch this video for more info. Read more
The CSS Jackson was an Ironclad ship. While made out of mostly wood, the outside of the ship, above the waterline, is reinforced with iron plating to provide "clading." Watch this video for more info. Read more
Opened in 1962, the National Civil War Naval Museum at Port Columbus displays the wooden hulls of two Confederate gunboats that had been destroyed near the end of the war to prevent enemy capture.
