We are more than happy to be judged on this simple but stylish colombard: lovely apple fruitiness and superbly balanced acidity, plus a long crisp finish.
Garganega/Pinot Grigio, Vetriano, 2012, 12%
19.50
A fresh and lively blend of north east italy’s two classic varieties to combine fruit and roundness with minerality and complexity. But check out the superb pinot grigio puiattini below …
Les Granges Des Felines, Vermentino, Piquepoul Sauvignon, Herault 2012, 12.5%
19.50
Another example of how inexpensive and low alcohol wines can deliver the goods. This blend of vermentino with fashionable picpoul and sauvignon has fruit and mineral complexity on the one hand and wondrous fresh gooseberries on the other. This is summer in the south of france in a glass.
Gavi Briccotondo, Fontanafredda 2011, 12.5%
25.00
Our wine of the month by popular demand. One of italy's most fashionable whites, it is noted for acute dryness and fresh, flinty acidity. It has a full, delicate, elegant bouquet which brings flowers and fresh fruit to mind - lemons, lilies of the valley and green apples. A lovely wine
White & Rose Wine: Fresh, Fruity Whites
Sauvignon Blanc De Gras, Colchagua Valley, Chile, 2011/2012, 13%
19.95
The montgras state-of-the-art winery in chile’s colchagua valley was singled it by decanter as one of the best and most innovative in chile. Dry, medium bodied and clean as a whistle.
Sauvignon Blanc, Urlar, Gladstone, New Zealand, 2011 14%
33.50
We’re one of the first in the UK to stock this exciting new wine which is both organic and biodynamic. It has all the vibrant acidity you expect from a kiwi sauvignon but with extra richness from 10% barrel fermentation. Wine guru matthew jukes really rates this, and so do we.
Picpoul De Pinet, Domaine Roquemolière, Coteaux Du Languedoc, 2011 12.5%
24.95
The classic match with shellfish in that exquisite part of the french mediterranean coast, but increasingly popular now in the UK. This one is made by a small grower near beziers and combines its freshness with richness and body.
Pouilly Fumé, Domaine Favray, 2011, 12.5%
33.50
Too many pouilly fumés are just clones of sancerre, but this is the real thing – fermented in stainless steel with wild yeasts for greater richness and depth of flavour.
White & Rose Wine: Rich, Full Whites
Sunnycliff Chardonnay, Victoria, Australia 2012 13.0%
22.95
For those of us who gave up on oz chardonnay a few years ago, here’s the best reason we’ve found to return. On the nose, there are complex green melon and citrus peel aromas with some floral notes and very subtle vanilla oak, and the creamy melon fruit continues on the palate with some delicious floral, citrus notes.
Saint Veran, Domaine Paquet, 2010, 13%
35.50
An old wilde’s favourite. Grown in the cooler maçonnais region (the vineyards overlook fuissé) , only a third of the wine goes into oak before bottling. So it has some of the richness of its cote d’or cousins, but a great deal of minerality and racy acidity.
Condrieu, Les Vins De Vienne, 2004 14%
52.00
Her royal highness jancis robinson mw made this her wine of the week a while ago. Here’s what she said: “this one is really exciting. It starts very rich and heady with that classic blossomy, dried apricot nose of fully ripe viognier, is very full-bodied and vibrato but then finishes dry and very firm. Much more exciting than the average condrieu, and a much better price.” here’s to you, mrs robinson
Petit Chablis, Louis Michel and Fils, 2011, 12.5%
31.50
Not petit in the sense of small, but petit chablis as a particular region. This is a purist’s choice of chablis: long fermentation with no added yeast produces a fresh, vibrant wine with no ak and mouth-watering minerality. Beautifully balanced.
Montagny 1ère Cru, Les Coères, Domaine Bernollin, 2008 13%
38.50
A classic from les coères, one of the extra special, named vineyards in montagny. Once opened, its golden green gains real complexity, developing a buttery, honeyed richness and real character. Sensational.
White & Rose Wine: Rosé & Blush
La Lande, Vin De Pays D’Oc, 2011, 11.5%
15.95
With an attractive pale pink colour, this is a light and refreshing rosé from the languedoc region of southern france. Cinsault lends itself particularly well to the production of rosés, and this dry, un-oaked example can be enjoyed as an aperitif or with a wide range of salads and light dishes.
Saumur Brut Rosé, Domaine De Brize
29.95
A proper pink fizz from warwick’s twin town. Red english summer fruits on the nose with a crunchy apple flavour on the palate and red fruits on the finish. Not sickly sweet at all but beautifully generous and dry.
Pinot Grigio Blush, IGT Veneto, Il Sospiro 2011, 12.5%
19.95
Pinot grigio is actually a pink grape and make great rosé wine. This is a classic example – salmon pink in colour with a nose of freshly crushed cranberries. Easy and refreshing to drink, too, with a clean finish of zingy citrus and red fruit.
Laurent-Perrier Rosé Brut NV
80.00
Deep salmon pink in colour, with a wonderfully expressive bouquet and enormous depth of flavour. Plus that beautiful 17th century-style bottle.
Red Wine: Soft, Supple Reds
Sangiovese Vetriano, Puglia, Italy, 13%
15.95
A delicious soft and slightly spicy sangiovese from the heel of italy. Modern, forward and easy drinking, with red berries on the nose, and a hint of peppery spice on the palate.
Montepulciano D’Abruzzo, Bianchi, Umani Ronchi, 2011 13%
20.95
A cracking wine and cracking value. Jammed full of fruit and spice with soft tannins and great acidity. Immensely drinkable.
Leduc Malbec, IGP Pays D’Oc, France, 2012, 13%
21.50
Another ‘new wave’ wine from southern france which emphasizes the up-front juicy black fruit flavours of proper malbec. Forget argentina – this is the famous original!
Campo Nuevo, Navarra, Spain 2011, 13.5%
17.50
Extraordinary value. 100% tempranillo, with red fruits and raspberries with a hint of truffles. Good structure, balancing acidity and luscious long finish.
Merlot De Gras, Colchagua Valley, Chile, 2012, 14%
19.95
Acclaimed in a recent issue of decanter, the montgras winery is one of the best in chile, and this is their benchmark merlot. Brim full of juicy raspberry and blackcurrant aromas and flavours. Terrific!
Beaujolais Village, Cuvée Traditionelle, Domaine Vissoux 2012 12.5%
26.50
Real village beaujolais from a renowned domaine. On the nose and the palate, it’s proper gamay – no bubble gum at all. Made from old vines and unfiltered, this is what gamay and beaujolais is about.
Red Wine: Ripe, Succulent Reds
Carignan Vieilles Vignes, Les Archères, Vdp D’Oc, France 2012 12%
18.50
A full flavoured easy-drinking classic of the languedoc. Lovely cherry/ruby-red colour, intense fruit from old vines and a hint of vanilla on the nose plus a soft, round palate with properly integrated tannins. Great value.
Cotes Du Rhone, Domaine De La Mirandole, 2011, 14%
25.95
From pont st esprit, where provence meets the rhone. It’s fresher and livelier, with higher acidity, than its more northerly cote du rhone siblings. Made by the julien family, who traditionally sell the majority of their grapes at a premium price to guigal, this is an exemplary blend of syrah and grenache.
Bourgogne Pinot Noir, Chateau De La Charrière, 2010 12.5%
29.95
Well-made burgundian pinot noir at a reasonable cost is something of a holy grail for compilers of wine lists. This is benchmark village red burgundy – with classic pinot fruit flavours and pleasantly astringent tannins. Alternatively, check out the haut cotes de nuits or the new world option below ….
Pinot Noir Reserva, De Gras, Chile, 2011 14.5%
22.50
Unfined and minimally filtered, this is the proper taste of pinot noir: farmyards! Too much new world pinot is a little stewed but this is grown in the cooler valleys and is almost burgundian in style. Medium bodied, with delicious fresh fruit and refreshing acidity.
Antu Ninquén Syrah, Colchagua Valley, Chile, 2009 14.5%
29.95
From the first mountain estate in chile, these intense and brooding syrah was introduced to us by the wonderful andrea ilabaca from mont gras. Deep and inky purple, it is a full and rich, with ripe blackberry fruits, smoky oak and a beautiful finish. Sensational.
Red Wine: Full, Opulent Reds
Sunnycliff Shiraz, Victoria, Australia, 2010 14.5%
22.95
It may sound like the name of a torquay bed-and-breakfast, but this is exemplary aussie shiraz - sweet, rich and dense, dense but restrained. It defines the new style of australian winemaking – subtler and more nuanced but true to the character of the country and the terroir. And check out the chardonnay, made by another “favourite son” on page 5.
Marqués De Arienzo, Rioja Crianza, 2008, 13.5%
25.50
This is the crianza from marqués de riscal. A modern rioja with a delicious smokiness. This is the best-selling restaurant wine in spain, a benchmark for style, polish and elegance.
Chateauneuf Du Pape, La Reserve Des Oliviers, Maison Favier, Chante Cigale 2010 14%
42.00
From matthew jukes: “this incredible wine... doesn't need any barrel flavours to prop i up, preferring to use the inbuilt complexity of fruit and spice and its extraordinary grapes to do the job admirably … it might just be the most impressive, summery, top-end red i have tasted in years.”
Douro Red, Quinta Do Crasto, Portugal, 2011, 13.5%
25.00
The roquette family has won decanter golds and a third place in the wine spectator’s ‘best wines in the world’. This one is rich and bold, full of red berry flavours and with amazing length. One of the last wines made from grapes trodden by foot, it got a rave review in the observer recently.
Pinot Noir Urlar, Gladstone, NZ, 2010, 14%,
39.95
This has a style which is all its own – plenty of up-front fruit balanced by delicious soft tannins and fine acidity. It’s a ‘fine wine’ in every sense, but wonderfully quaffable too. This winery is going to be a superstar.
Bordeaux: Red Bordeaux
Chateau Nicot, Bordeaux, 2009, 13%
24.00
15% cabernet sauvignon and 85% merlot, this is a softer, more modern style of everyday claret – mid-weight, versatile and with good structure. Designed to drink young, without the need for long ageing.
Le Clocher De Rouget, Pomerol, 2007, 13%
45.00
The second wine of chateau rouget, one of the great names of pomerol. Rich and intense, with smooth, silky tannins, this is merlot dominant, with 15% cabernet franc, and benefits from michel rolland’s fruit and finesse, creating earthy black cherry and liquorice flavours that are ready to drink now.
Chateau Picque Caillou, Pessac Léognan, 2007, 13%
55.00
An old-established and recently revitalised vineyard. It has red fruits, green peppers and herbs on the nose; on the palate, it is rounded with fully integrated tannins. Drinking now.
Chateau Potensac, Cru Bourgeois, Medoc, 2005, 13%
70.00
A great wine from a great year. Pontensac is owned by the delon family (of léoville las cas) and regularly makes wines of classed growth quality. In 2005, they excelled themselves: classic, firm, structured – with almost equal amounts of cabernet and merlot.
Chateau Larrivet-Haut-Brion, Pessac Léognan, 2000, 13%
90.00
Gorgeous. Crunchy fruit with a dried-plum, dried-cranberry character, along with a little green peppercorn on the nose, with nuances of tobacco and hot, smoky pencil shavings too. On the palate, to quote wine doctor chris kissack, “a restrained texture to match that crunchy style of fruit, a very gentle extract, with evolving liquorice and charcoal elements rubbed on the fruit, with just little suggestions of graves”.
Chateau Gruaud Larose, 2ème Grand Cru Classé, St Julian, 2002 13%
95.00
From robert parker, marking it 88-90: "a sweet, fruity, medium-bodied, surprisingly forward effort, the deep plum/purple-colored (sic) 2002 gruaud larose exhibits ripe aromas revealing herbaceous as well as spice notes.”
Chateau Bertinat Lartigue, Saint Emilion, 2009, 12.5%
34.00
This is a classic saint emilion. Gorgeous ruby red in colour, full and rounded but with some good tannins in the mouth. With 90% merlot and 10% cabernet, it’s made by richard dubois for early drinking, and this is spot-on right now. Recommended.
Chateau Latour De by, Cru Bourgeois Superieur, Medoc, 2004 13%
45.00
Primarily cabernet sauvignon, with light tannins and good fruit with a hint of cedar. A good reliable classic claret which has been a long-term wilde’s favourite.
Chateau Larrivet-Haut-Brion, Pessac Léognan, 2004, 13%
65.00
A classic claret. Medium bodied, sweet tannins, cherries and currants, smoky sandalwood. Tannins now fully integrated and its lushness coming to the fore.
Chateau D’Issan, 3ème Cru Classé Margaux, 2007, 13%
70.00
Dark and smoky and gorgeous. Quite light on the nose, but soft and intense on the palate and finishes beautifully. Drinking now.
Chateau Kirwan, 3ème Cru Classé, Margaux, 1995, 13%
95.00
Hailed as the best ever kirwan, this wonderfully rich and intense wine is fully mature right now. The highlight of owner and vigneron nathalie schyler’s tutored bordeaux tasting, kirwan has no less than 10% petit verdot, so it has extra depth and intensity. Right now, we’re selling it at retail price

Prosecco Argeo (I)
6.50
Gobillard Grand Reserve Premier Cru NV (F)
8.75
Saumur Brut Rosé, Domaine De Brize
29.95
From warwick’s twin town. Red english summer fruits on the nose with a crunchy apple flavour on the palate and red fruits on the finish. Generous and dry.
Louis Roederer Brut Premier NV
60.00
Cristal may be the favourite of rappers and racing car drivers, but it is brut premier which is the embodiment of the louis roederer style. A blend of pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier, it includes 10% of reserve wines from three former harvests so it combines all the fruitiness and freshness of youth with the vinosity of a fully mature wine.
Dom Perignon 2003
150.00
When only the very best will do. The golden hue with glints of silver and green. The delicate, numerous and vivacious bubbles that form an unbroken ring in the glass. The bright, concentrated flavour of the best vintage for a generation. It doesn’t get much better.
Saumur Brut Rosé, Domaine De Brize (F)
7.25
Prosecco Argeo, Brut NV, Ruggeri, Italy
26.00
A classic, elegant prosecco with tiny bubbles – the hallmark of quality. Fresh green apples on the nose and palate, with a long crisp finish.
Champagne Grand Reserve Premier Cru, Gobillard NV
42.00
This has got to be the best house champagne around – a premier cru reserve with real elegance and extra richness from significantly longer ageing than many of the more famous marques. Made by a man who lives just 10 metres from dom perignon’s grave!
Laurent-Perrier Rosé Brut NV
80.00
Deep salmon pink in colour, with a wonderfully expressive bouquet and enormous depth of flavour. Plus that beautiful 17th century-style bottle.
