    京都府南西部に位置する村。急峻な地形を開拓して作られたため、独特の建築手法が見られる。村内には京都大学桂キャンパスが立地するのみであるため、人口は0人である。昼間は、学生や研究者が数百人程度いるため、常住比が極端な市町村として知られる。なお、昼間人口は男性が90%を超えている。村内へは鉄道が通じておらず、京都市西京区にある阪急桂駅よりバスのみが村内にアクセスできる唯一の公共交通機関となっている。
