Smith Tower, Seattle's first skyscraper, was the brainchild of gun and typewriter manufacturing heir Burns Smith, who planned to build the tallest building outside of New York.

Completed in 1914, Smith Tower was the 4th tallest building in the world. It remained the tallest on the West Coast until the Space Needle was built in 1962.
