One of the UES's cooler, more hipsterbars. Great cocktails, even better brunch (love the fried chicken & waffles!). Typical faux vintage-y Williamsburg-esque decor.
The Penrose on East 82nd represents a welcome reprieve from that neighborhood's sports bars. Go for the smoked meatsandwich, made with 40-day-cured brisket that's been slathered with mustard. Read more
The Upper East Side. Ruairi Curtin. Irish Gastropub. Try - Spiced beef sandwich (cured for 40 days, spiced in house for four days, then slow roasted for six hours). Cocktails made with Irish whiskey. Read more
The soft shell crab sandwich was so yummy and crispy! Definitely get the buffalo Brussel sprouts for a shareable plate especially since mains don't come with sides. It was delicious!!'
Where you bring your friends from out of town to convince them that UES is vaguely cool. Brunch is great, and the cocktails are varied and well crafted. Gets crowded and loud on weekend nights.
When you look in through the door, don't stop there. Go right in, it's a lot bigger than it looks. What a great vibe and atmosphere. The fish tacos were excellent with Valentina Mexican Hot Sauce
Unusually cool downtown vibe on the Upper East at The Penrose! Awesome bartenders, unique (and delicious) cocktails. Great interior design. Great with friends or a date.
Finally, a proper mixologygastropub in the UES. While close to the 2nd ave douchebars, it seems to be a haven for what passes for a hipster on the UES. The fried oyster sliders are great.
The beer list and cocktails were great! Not fond of the crowdedness w/ little standing room options (small columns w/ even smaller shelves to rest one's drink), but the friendly staff makes up for it.
Pretty solid brunchrestaurant with classic and new-ish style foods... long wait for table, or just sit at bar quick!!! Plenty of great cocktails and craft beer options
Found one of the better burgers in NY. Better than those of Shke Shk or Brgr Jt! Fries are awesome as well. Great cocktails, extensive beer list, downtown vibe in uptown! Can't wait to go back.
Yorkville 20-something singles scene. Super busy neighbourhood pub. Above average bar food at affordable prices. Fish tacos and shishito peppers were quite tasty.
Great atmosphere. The Penrose Burger has a flavorful blend, complemented well with the potatobun. Does not come a side. The large fries though is more than enough for two people.
Great selection of beer on tap and scotch on shelf...oh and there's a killer burger to help you get through that next round. Check the back bar for current craft beer offerings.
TT: Soda spikes are the daily draw, from 4 to 7 p.m., at this UES staple: Your choice of sprit plus root beer, tonic, grapefruitsoda or ginger beer, all house-made, for $7. Draught beers $5, wines $6
Adorable and a delicious brunch to boot. The chicken & waffles were yum and the egg in tomato tasty. Strong coffee = happy Sunday mornings (look for the old timey typewriters)
Come on Sundays for live music! Old pal spencer is my favorite cocktail (kinda like a boulevardier), and the dirty pickle martini is solid too. Murphy's stout is A+.
Another loud filament light bulb filled gastropub employing the failsafe method to young professionals wallets of fried pickles, artisanal drinks, mac and cheese and tiles. Tear for Ship of Fools...
Great atmosphere with an excellent playlist. Crowd is young and fun, and the drinks are decently priced! If you like a good beer selection, come here.. Definitely will be back!
The Bitches say: B-. We love the décor at the Penrose and it’s a great vibe for brunch. The food is pretty good, but nothing remarkable, however, and the service was hit-or-miss. Read more
It's the epitome of post-bubble yuppie retro cliché chic but the food is actually quite good, reasonably priced and a bottomless cup of coffee (without any fair trade accoutrement) costs $3. Why not?
Came for a Sunday brunch. The French toast sticks were great. The avocado toast was solid, but I've had better. There is no soy milk, or a proper coffee machine, so I couldn't drink my coffee.
It's got that old-timey decor that's so popular with establishments across the river these days in a gigantic space that houses two long bars and three separate dining rooms.
Get an Old Fashioned with Bullet Eye Whiskey and make sure the orange peel is burnt at the end. Crowd can be a bit pretentious and dominantly white but what do you expect from the UES?
Though the burgers and fried sausages are excellent at this upscaleIrish pub, Penrose carries rare and unknown whiskeys, and turns them into savory cocktails.
In the heart of the Upper East Side, The Penrose welcomes all who seek friendly company, good conversation, and solid drinks. Inspired by old American and Cork traditions, we serve locally sourced foods, well crafted brews, and drinks to please all.
