Marquette University is named for Fr. Jacques Marquette, S.J. (1637-75), a French, Jesuit missionary and explorer of North America. Visit Central Mall to see his statue standing 8 feet 2 inches tall.
St. Joan of Arc Chapel, a remnant of 15th century France, took nine months to dismantle. The chapel was rebuilt, stone by stone, on Marquette's Central Mall and dedicated on May 26, 1966.
Opened in 1907, Johnston Hall is Marquette University's very first building on the campus. The five-story Gothic-style academic hall is named for benefactor Robert A. Johnston (1846-1907).
Built in 1924, Marquette Hall first served as the Science Building. The four-story structure was renamed Marquette Hall in 1976. Listen on Wednesdays at noon for mini-concerts on the 48-bell carillon.
The spiritual center of Marquette, Church of the Gesu is a Milwaukee Archdiocese parish. Completed in 1894, Gesu is named for the church in Rome where Jesuit founder St. Ignatius is buried.
The Alumni Memorial Union (AMU) is Marquette University's gathering place and was named to honor all alumni. The five-level, $15 million union opened on Aug. 20, 1990, replacing the 1953 Brooks Union.
On Sept. 4, 1964, the Beatles visited Milwaukee for a concert, staying at the Coach House Motor Inn, now Mashuda Hall. The Fab Four supposedly stayed somewhere on the seventh floor.
This suite-style hall is named after Father McCabe, who in 1909 led Marquette to become the first Catholic university in the world to offer co-education as part of its undergraduate program. Read more.
Raynor Memorial Libraries is named for Rev. John P. Raynor, S.J. (1923-1997) who served as university president for 25 years from 1965 to 1990. Nearly 50,000 alumni graduated during his presidency.
In 1969, Marquette Athletics hung special jerseys in the Gymnasium, retiring number 11 for the Apollo 11 moon landing astronauts. The crew received the Pere Marquette Discovery Award on Nov. 8, 1969.
Opened in 2004, the Al McGuire Center is an athletic facility named for Coach Al McGuire. McGuire led the men's basketball team to an NCAA championship, an NIT title and 295 victories in 13 seasons.
22 years before Marquette's founding in 1881, Abraham Lincoln gave an address on Sept. 30, 1859 at the state fair grounds (and the future MU campus). A plaque near Schroeder Hall marks the occasion.

Norris Park is named for Fannie Wells Norris (1852-1937), a benefactor to Milwaukee youth. Originally a playground dedicated on Sept. 4, 1940, the park was renovated and rededicated on Sept. 20, 2011.
Raynor Library's first-floor lobby features the cornerstone face of Marquette University's first building, placed on August 15, 1880 at 1004 W. State St.
