A list of places we visited during our August 2012 summer institute, studying the influence of global trade on life in Massachusetts, 1780-1860.
1. Peabody Essex Museum (PEM)
Making Freedom: Several additional buildings/historic homes are part of the museum, too--ask about visiting them!
2. Concord Museum
3. Home Of Ralph Waldo Emerson
4. Schooner Fame
5. New Bedford Whaling Museum
Making Freedom: Take a guided tour! In the main lobby, check out the stains on the floor caused by whale oil dripping from the skeleton suspended from the ceiling!
6. Sleepy Hollow Cemetery
Making Freedom: Concord Museum can arrange a private tour of the cemetery for you--useful!
7. Affrican American Museum
Making Freedom: Call ahead! Ask lots of questions. The director has stories to tell!
8. Hi-Nantucket International Hostel
Making Freedom: This was great for our group of 16 teachers studying the history of whaling!
