You mentioned design museums; the Cooper-Hewitt is the national design museum and is housed in an old mansion.

I know you aren't leaving Italy to eat more Italian food BUT this place is my number one favourite place to eat in New York. It's super-small but cozy. I recommend the goat cheese and walnut ravioli.
Belvedere Castle, the Conservatory Garden, Bow Bridge, the Ramble, Carousel, Sheep Meadow, Alice in Wonderland statue and Strawberry Fields are all cool things to see or do (Among others).

It's cupcakes are kind of overrated but they make a MEAN banana pudding. It's fluffy and has chunks of banana and cake in it. Bliss.

Famous for its perogies... The East Village location is open 24 hours a day, so it's great for late-night dining. Also does amazing breakfast food. The blintz are super good for breakfast.
