John Denver sang “Country Roads” here Sept. 6, 1980, to open the new stadium. Singing “Country Roads” after victories is now a favorite tradition.
The plaza is a memorial for those lost on the Battleship USS West Virginia at Pearl Harbor and WVU students who died in service of the USA in wartime, and also hosts student memorial services.
