This place is usually a good pick if you have more than a few people with you, becasue it doesn't seem to get too crowded, and its layout does not induce claustrophobia.
They closed this place for nearly a year, and transformed it from a filthy dive, to a somewhat less filthy dive with two great bathrooms. I kind of love this place.
Don't visit on weekends during Summer, it'll be mobbed. Avoid crowds by going on weeknights. Great views of The Hudson; Explore old ships (if they're unlocked).
If you're caught in Grammercy, you could do worse than this bar owned by Horse Racing enthusiat Irish folks.
Avoid during major sporting events. The Market Bar upstairs is particularly nice if it isn't too crowded.
An old standard of the Improv community. Indie shows are happening in the basement as we speak.
Ali has a knack for starting businesses, I suppose. This place took a little while to fgure out its name, or its identity, but it's coming along. The Saturday crowd has become insufferable, however.
Ali has set up a theater bar here that will be hard to match, although they should bring back the coffee and sandwiches too.
Free Pizza with your beer, which is nice. Otherwise, the resident college-to-post-college aged crowd is typically annoying.
