A rough ranking of the shots of espresso I had in London, circa August 2014.
1. Workshop Coffee Co.
Eric: Best espresso I had in London. Harmonious balance of caramel, chocolate, and fruit. Coffee "for here" requires a seat, oddly.
2. Taylor St Baristas
Eric: Really excellent espresso (although if I'm nitpicking, it was served a little too hot). Cool little back-alley location.
3. Tonic Coffee Bar
Eric: Really great espresso. The place is super-tiny, so by default they serve them in paper cups (try asking for a real one?)
4. Prufrock Coffee
Eric: Very good espresso: bright and fruity up front, chocolate and caramel in the middle. Unfortunately, a little bitter and grounds-y on the finish.
5. Allpress Espresso Bar
Eric: A pretty good shot of espresso, despite the paper cup.
6. Fernandez & Wells
Eric: Similar to Prufrock: espresso with great potential up front and an unfortunately bitter/astringent finish.
7. Kaffeine
Eric: Ordered a ristretto. Way over-extracted, super acidic and gross. Maybe the normal espresso is better?
8. Ozone Coffee Roasters
Eric: There is better espresso in the neighborhood: go find it. The shot I had here was super-bitter and astringent.
9. Shoreditch Grind
Eric: Like at Kaffeine, I ordered a ristretto here and it was almost undrinkable. Super-bitter, astringent, taste of coffee grounds.
10. The Borough Barista
Eric: Maybe the worst shot of espresso I've ever had. Took one sip and walked out.
