I visited Bombay / Mumbai from Dec 29 2011 to Jan 1 2012, guided by two good friends who lived there 9 years combined. Here are some highlights. Mostly food.
Baratunde: Rated one of the top 10 restaurants in the world by the New York Times. It's a must-eat experience. Best seafood I've ever had. Ever. Go here. If you don't, you're a failure as a human
Baratunde: Delicious & historic place founded by Persian descendants. Try to meet the owner. He'll weave a tall tale involving U.S. ambassadors, fighting guard dogs and the secret Coca Cola recipe.
Baratunde: Apparently the best dosas in town. I'm not going to argue with that. It's amazing, and order a coffee. Dude does a great trick involving gravity and coffee
Baratunde: I strongly recommend the Dharavi slum tour. The guides are professional, knowledgeable and super pleasant. After 2.5 hours, I felt much more present in the city. Ask lots of questions!

Baratunde: The best service I've ever experienced at any hotel anywhere. If you called the front desk and asked them to re-colonize India for you, I think they'd do it
Baratunde: Saw a private screening of the film Sholay here during the day. Seems like it would be great fun at night with the dancing and the drinking and the fornicating
