If you’re on a long layover, go outside. There’s nothing inside the airport and it’s too small for the amount of people it has to handle. Visit some of the restaurants in the close neighbourhood.
Waiting in the international departure terminal, beer is much cheaper through duty free (they don't lock your purchases away from you) than at the EXPENSIVE bar 2000T/piva
Avoid taxi scam. Use uberX 2500kzt+ or install app Rutaxi pricing 1000kzt to 1500kzt to the central part of city. The only means of public transport is bus 92 (check app citybus for route) 80kzt.
Take a pen when you fly to Almaty to fill a migrational card out as the customs staff don't have any. You will be pushed back from customs' kiosk to grab it from someone. No way to buy it in there!
No prayer room for muslimah. They only have small corner that fit 1 person to perform Solah. Ablution can be made in toilet but a bit difficult and quite unclean.
Very small airport. No duty free. Only few very expensiveboutiques and some kind of bar. No any business lounge for most international airlines. Complete mess at the exit with freelance "taxi".
Just a quick note to those traveling within the country: they don't really care about the liquids in your hand baggage. International guidelines for 150ml limit allowance are not followed.
ALA is the largest international airport in Kazakhstan. It is located about 18km from the centre of Almaty, the country's largest city and commercial capital.
